John Goodman just made a fellow actor's day. The 74-year-old Roseanne star was spotted at the grocery store by actor David Deluise, but to many fans he looked unrecognizable.
David, who is best known for portraying Jerry Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place, shared a selfie with John to his Instagram, writing: "He was my childhood !! Legend ! I love that I get to say that to someone ;) if you know you know."
While the Monsters Inc. actor doesn't have a public Instagram account, his fans flooded David's comments to share their jealousy at their run-in.
"Holy cow man. The fact that he gets to stand next to you? Priceless. Of course I'm half kidding. The fact that you get to be in the same air, he breathes is even more miraculous. So there's that," one person wrote. Another fan added: "John Goodman is a living legend."
And one person, noting John's transformation, commented: "John Goodman is still looking good."
Inside John Goodman's transformation
Many fans commented on David's Instagram noting John's transformation. The beloved actor has been a fixture of the Hollywood community for decades. John rose to fame in 1988 when he starred as Dan Conner in Roseanne.
Soon after, he appeared in The Big Lebowski, The West Wing, and Argo. And in recent years, John has focused more on his than his career.
In 2010, the actor revealed on Late Night with David Letterman that at his heaviest weight, he was "pushing 400." He continued: "I'd get off of Roseanne – every spring. I'd lose 60 pounds every spring. And then I got too fond of the barley corn," he said, adding that he would gain the weight back "and some."
John quit drinking and decided he wanted to live a better and healthier lifestyle. "It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me and it had got to the point where, every time I did it, it was becoming more and more debilitating," he told The Guardian in 2012. "It was life or death. It was time to stop."
By 2023, he had lost some 200 pounds.
"It was basically just portion control and 'I don't need it,'" he told AARP Magazine in November 2018. "I was just shoving everything into my mouth."
Aside from minding what he ate, John started exercising. In June 2023, he shared with Rolling Stone that he enjoys "just getting out and walking the dogs" as well as boxing. "I dug [boxing]...," he added. "Nobody's going to get hurt, but it's just hitting the mitts and trying to learn."
What is John Goodman doing now?
John recently starred in the comedic drama Chili Finger alongside Judy Greer and Sean Astin. And personally, he is enjoying life with his longtime wife Annabeth Hartzog. The two married in 1989 and welcomed daughter Evangeline Goodman in 1990. When the actor isn't on set, John and Annabeth spend most of their time in New Orleans.
