Vanessa Bryant has been inundated with love after sharing a heartbreaking tribute to her late husband, Kobe Bryant, on what would have been his 48th birthday.
The 44-year-old marked the emotional occasion on Sunday, August 23, by posting a touching throwback photograph of herself curled up beside the NBA legend outdoors.
In the candid snap, Vanessa can be seen wrapping her arms around her husband as Kobe beams at the camera, offering an intimate glimpse into their life together before his tragic death in 2020.
Keeping her message simple, Vanessa wrote: "Happy birthday, baby. I love you so much," alongside a red heart and prayer hands emoji, adding the date "8/23."
The post quickly attracted hundreds of thousands of likes, while famous friends and fans rushed to offer their support.
David Beckham left three heart emojis and tagged Vanessa, while Michael Phelps and Kelly Rowland also responded with hearts. Kris Jenner posted a string of red hearts, while Grey's Anatomy star Chandra Wilson wrote: "Love this."
Beyoncé's mom Tina Knowles added: "Sending you love and hugs your beautiful man's birthday," alongside heart and prayer emojis.
Kobe would have turned 48 on August 23, more than six years after the devastating helicopter crash that claimed his life and that of the couple's 13-year-old daughter, Gianna "Gigi" Bryant.
What happened to Kobe Bryant?
Kobe and Gianna were among nine people killed on January 26, 2020, when the helicopter they were travelling in crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, California.
The group had been travelling to a youth basketball game at Kobe's Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks when the aircraft went down. Federal investigators later concluded that the pilot became spatially disoriented after flying into clouds.
Kobe was 41 and Gianna was 13. The tragedy left Vanessa raising their three surviving daughters, Natalia, now 23, Bianka, nine, and Capri, seven.
Vanessa has continued to keep both Kobe and Gianna's memories alive in the years since, regularly marking birthdays and anniversaries with family photographs and heartfelt messages.
Earlier this year, on the sixth anniversary of their deaths, Vanessa once again paid tribute to her husband and daughter, sharing memories of them with her followers.
Vanessa Bryant's life after losing Kobe and Gianna
Vanessa has spoken candidly about the unimaginable grief of losing her husband and daughter at the same time, while explaining that her surviving daughters gave her a reason to keep moving forward.
In a rare 2021 interview with People, she described Kobe and Gigi as her "motivation" and said her daughters helped her "smile through the pain."
She has also worked tirelessly to preserve the father and daughter's legacies through the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, which aims to provide opportunities for young athletes.
That determination was evident again when Vanessa fought a high-profile legal battle against Los Angeles County over graphic photographs taken and shared by first responders at the crash scene.
During the 2022 trial, Vanessa testified about the lasting distress the existence of those images had caused her, telling the court: "I live in fear every day of being on social media and these popping up."
Following the verdict in her favor, her attorneys announced that proceeds from the judgment would be donated to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation to "shine a light on Kobe and Gigi's legacy."
Vanessa and Kobe's love story
Vanessa and Kobe shared more than two decades together after first meeting in 1999, when Vanessa was 17 and Kobe was 20.
They became engaged just six months later and married in April 2001, going on to welcome four daughters: Natalia, Gianna, Bianka and Capri.
At the public Celebration of Life for Kobe and Gianna at Los Angeles' Staples Center in February 2020, Vanessa offered one of her most moving insights into their marriage.
She described Kobe as her "everything" and spoke about their plans to grow old together, while remembering the tiny details of their relationship, from his romantic gestures to the way he would worry if he couldn't see her sitting in her usual seat during a game.
Vanessa has continued to mark Kobe's birthday every year. On his 47th birthday last August, she shared another collection of photographs of her husband, while their eldest daughter Natalia also honored her father.
August 24 carries another poignant significance for the family. The date is officially recognized in Los Angeles as Kobe Bryant Day, chosen because Kobe wore jersey numbers 8 and 24 during his legendary 20-season career with the Los Angeles Lakers.
