Turner & Hooch premiered in 1989 and fans of the film are still thinking about it today. The buddy cop film starred Tom Hanks alongside Beasley the Dog, a French mastiff, as well as Craig T. Nelson and actress Mare Winningham.
While Tom, 70, and Craig, 82, went on to have impressive careers in Hollywood, Mare, 67, lives a more lowkey acting life. Keep reading to find out what happened to the actress after her turn in Turner & Hooch as Dr. Emily Carson.

Mare Winningham is an award winning actress
After she starred as the veterinarian in Turner & Hooch, Mare went on to appear in a string of critically acclaimed films. In 1995, the actress starred in Georgia, a film about a punk singer who has a complicated relationship with her older sister. For her role, Mare was nominated for both a Screen Actors Guild and Academy Award.
A few years later, she acted in the mini series George Wallace, and won herself an Emmy award. Mare went on to be nominated for four more Emmys, including in 2022 for the TV show Dopesick.

Mare Winningham is also a singer
Outside of her acting career, Mare is a singer too. She's released four albums over the years, with her most recent album being released in 2014. Mare's film and TV roles often highlight her voice.
For Georgia, the role that earned her an Oscar nomination, Mare starred as a club singer and sang three songs.

Mare Winningham's turn on Grey's Anatomy
In 2006, Mare appeared as Susan Grey, the stepmother of Dr. Meredith Grey and mom of Dr. Lexi Grey, on Grey's Anatomy. She guest starred in seasons two and three. Susan, who was killed off in season three after a bad case of the hiccups.

The actress has been married four times and divorced three. She married actor Adolfo "A" Martinez in the early '80s, but divorced after less than a year of marriage. Later, Mare married a TV technical advisor, William Mapel.
The two were married until 1994 after welcoming five children. Mare then married artist Jason Trucco, but their love story didn't last. In 2021, when Mare was 62, she tied the knot with her long time friend and ER co-star Anthony Edwards. The two are still together today.

Mare Winningham's five children
The actress is a mom-of-five – Riley, Patrick, Jack, Calla Louise, and Happy Atticus – who she shares with her second husband William. Her oldest son, Riley, was born in 1981. He tragically passed away at the age of 23 in 2005. At the time of his death, Riley was studying acting in Los Angeles.
While most of Mare's children keep their lives out of the spotlight, Patrick followed in his mom's footsteps. He forged a successful career as an actor. The actor, director and writer has been involved in several projects, including The Social Network, The Artist, and a brief stint on Mad Men.
