Bo Derek's family tree comes with an unexpected detail: her stepdaughter is older than she is. The 10 actress, 69, became stepmother to Sean Catherine Derek when she married actor and filmmaker John Derek in 1976. Sean was already 22, while Bo was just 19.
Today, Sean is 73, having celebrated her birthday on October 16. Bo turns 70 on November 20, meaning their actual age gap is a little over three years. And while Bo became one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces, Sean built a successful career behind the camera.
Who is Bo Derek's stepdaughter Sean Catherine Derek?
Sean is the daughter of John Derek and his first wife, actress and ballerina Pati Behrs. Her older brother, Russell, was also older than Bo.
Her father's subsequent marriages brought two more famous women into her family before Bo: Dr. No actress Ursula Andress and Dynasty star Linda Evans. John married Bo in 1976, and they remained together until his death in 1998.
Sean explored her upbringing in her 1982 memoir, Cast of Characters, writing about her father and the women in his life. She later helped Linda with her own 2011 memoir, maintaining a connection that outlasted Linda's marriage to John.
Her early working life also overlapped with her father's. Sean worked as a photojournalist and assisted him on photography assignments, gaining experience on the other side of the lens.
Sean Catherine Derek's Emmy-winning television career
Viewers may know Sean's work even if they don't recognize her name. Her writing credits include The Smurfs, Batman: The Animated Series and Mortal Kombat: Conquest. She also worked on Captain Planet and Spider-Man: The Animated Series, contributing to shows that became childhood favorites for generations of viewers.
In 1993, she shared the Daytime Emmy for outstanding writing in an animated program for Batman: The Animated Series, alongside Paul Dini, Martin Pasko and Michael Reaves.
Sean and Bo also worked on John's productions. Recalling Bo's early producing experience in an oral history published by The Rialto Report, Sean credited her with learning quickly and managing the demands of working with her father.
Bo Derek on her own family choices
Bo did not have biological children. Speaking on Club Random in July, she explained that she had considered motherhood, but her life never seemed to become less hectic.
"I kept waiting for my life to slow down. It never slowed down," she said. John, who already had two children, did not want more.
Bo later found love with Sex and the City actor John Corbett, whom she married in 2020. For Sean, meanwhile, writing had been an ambition long before her television credits and Emmy recognition. As she recalled in The Rialto Report's oral history: "Even when I was a little kid, I wanted to be a writer."
