Linda's breakthrough

Linda shot to fame in 1984 after starring as the damsel in distress in The Terminator, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Her look at the time was very much rooted in '80s style, with big, bouffant hair, and her youthful appearance lent believability to her character. However, Linda wasn't exactly a fan of her aesthetic in the first Terminator film, as she told TNT Magazine.

"I look at the first one, and I can't believe my voice was so high and mousey and that my hair was so awful. Oh my God, it doesn't even look like real hair; it looks like a wig," she laughed.

"When young actors come to me and say: 'What do you recommend to someone who is just starting out?', I say: 'Never be put on film in the 1980s because you will regret it.'"

Certified action star

The '90s saw Linda transform completely from an up-and-coming actress to a Hollywood powerhouse after she reprised her role as Sarah Connor in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The film saw her undergo intense physical training as her character became a fierce warrior with the muscles to match.

"I said, 'This woman had been living with this certainty of man's demise for all these years, and she'd have become this wild thing,' so the warrior woman and crazy woman were all me," she told the BBC about accepting the role. "It was a wonderful opportunity to grow a character."

The brunette beauty described her physical transformation to Prevue Magazine, and shared insight into her grueling workout regimen. "For almost a year, I ran, lifted weights, trampolined, aerobicized, and bicycled – three hours a day, six days a week," she recalled.

"In the past I'd spent months at health clubs, but the training was never this focused. Now I'm stronger, I survive on four hours of sleep a night, and I'm much more confident."

"Still, there were drawbacks," she continued. "I got bigger than I wanted, a bit unfeminine. My legs got so muscular, I couldn't wear my old pants. Lately, my workouts have become more moderate; I think of them as a kind of meditation."

This was also the time that Linda built her famously muscular arms, which went on to inspire many an arm workout.

Motherhood

When Linda welcomed her second child, Josephine, with Terminator director James Cameron in 1993, her relationship with her body completely changed.

"If I had to pick a time when I felt most comfortable in my own skin, I would say right after my second child, Josephine, was born," she told Glamour.

"I felt very much like I owned my body, this body that was feeding a baby, and it was just a very happy time. Right before that I had done Terminator 2."

Stepping back from the spotlight

Linda stepped back from the spotlight in the '00s after her divorce from James, to spend time with family and to live a quiet life.

"I'd sworn off heavy roles since Terminator 2 because I was just so sick of playing these very earnest, strong women," she told the Jewish Journal.

Instead, she pivoted towards stage work and laid low from the public eye.

Making a comeback

Linda made a major Hollywood comeback in 2019 when she starred in Terminator: Dark Fate, and once again underwent a physical transformation for the role. "I worked out, leaned out, worked for a year, didn't have carbohydrates for a year," she shared on The Graham Norton Show.

Her personal trainer for the film, Mackie Shilstone, detailed her intense workout regimen to Deadline. "The first three months of work encompassed six days per week, 1.5 to two hours of circuit training exercises, using a cable weight apparatus with arms, permitting functional human movement patterns," he explained.

"Then, core training using a stability ball, steady-state and interval cardio training on an elliptical device, power training with a specially-designed medicine ball. All this with specialized pre-habilitation (injury prevention) exercises based on her biomechanical analysis."

He continued: "In the final nine months, Linda's training became more functional to what would be required of her Sarah Connor character in the film…No way we were going to let a stunt double take her place. Or worse, put her in the position to get pushed around by a younger adversary."

Her stance on aging

Linda was virtually unrecognizable when she returned to the screen in 2025 as Dr Kay in the final season of Stranger Things, with short, bouffant hair and a military-style uniform.

"It was a stunning turn of events, and I was thrilled, absolutely thrilled," she told Tudum of her casting in the hit series. "It's the first show I've ever done where I'm a fan and an actor, so what a delight."

In her 60s, Linda also became an advocate for aging naturally, and told Glamour that she would never dream of appearing younger.

"I have never been about what's on the outside, ever. I'm uncomfortable with makeup on – I only put it on when I work. I don't really even use moisturizer. I just don't care," she said.

"I am proud to be my age. I keep saying, 'Why does 40 have to be the new 60? Why can't 60 be the new 60? Why do we have to color everything with this idea of eternal youth?"

Better than ever

Linda looked stunning as she stepped out at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in the UK in August, with her highlighted-blonde hair swept in a neat bob and her style as practical and low-key as ever.
