The Munsters was a popular CBS sitcom that aired from 1964 to 1966

The series centered around a monster family's attempt at living a normal life in suburban America.

The monsters included Herman Munster, who portrayed Frakenstein, Lily, who was Frankenstein's vampire wife, Eddie, who was their werewolf son, Grandpa, who was a vampire and mad scientist, and Marilyn, who was the black sheep of the family because she looked like a regular human.

Most know how the family looks with their heavy makeup, however, it's time to explore what the actors actually looked like under all the layers below.

Fred Gwynne portrayed Herman on the hit show, and the actor passed away in 1993 at the age of 66.

For his role as Frankenstein, he donned up to 50 pounds of padding, on top of heavy special effects makeup.

Back when there was only black-and-white film, the actor wore bright violet face paint behind the scenes, because that color popped the most on that type of film.

Yvonne De Carlo portrayed Lily Munster on the series, while she sported heavy white face paint, a smoky eye, a red lip, and sleek black hair with white strands. She passed away in 2007 at the age of 84.

Believe it or not, Yvonne wasn't a fan of her signature makeup, revealing in the book, You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet: Interviews with Stars from Hollywood's Golden Era: "I'd wanted a TV series. But this? I wasn't sure. I had a hard time getting into the rhythm of it. Then director Joe Pevney suggested I play Lily as a sort of mixed-up Donna Reed character and not overdo anything."

She admitted: "When I saw the first pilot in a screening room I cringed at my makeup. It took two hours of makeup to make me seem like that. It ran for two huge seasons, the CBS quarreled with the creators about reruns and we got canceled. A movie in color in 1966 [Munster, Go Home!] showed off everything in reds and greens on my face. Boy, was I ugly."

Al Lewis portrayed grandpa on the sitcom and he passed away at the age of 82 in 2006. He donned white face paint, bushy eyebrows and slicked-down hair with a middle part.

Off-camera, the actor donned a gelled back short hairstyle and clean-cut eyebrows.

Butch Patrick

Butch Patrick, now 73, who portrayed Eddie, was a child actor on the series, who holds heartwarming memories from the set.

After the sitcom ended, the cast came back together for their 1966 movie Munster, Go Home!, and he was 13 at the time.

He recalled shooting the final scenes of the sitcom, and remembered: "The thing happened in that movie because we all knew the show was over, we all knew we were never going to work together again And the last scene in that movie when we jump in the Munster Coach and drive away from Munster Hall at about 11:00 at night was literally the last scene we shot, which almost never happens that you shoot an ending scene in sequence."

The star added: "So, we had this very surreal day knowing that this was the last time we were ever going to be together in this makeup and this costume and The Munsters would never ever be an entity again. And it was really kind of sad, but it was surreal."

Beverly Owen, who passed away at the age of 81 in 2019, portrayed Marilyn in the first 13 episodes, and then actress Pat Priest, now 90, took over for the remaining time.

On the show, Pat was a blond bombshell with stellar style, who looked most like herself on the series.
