SOPHIE'S FLORAL ELEGANCE FOR EASTER WORSHIP

17 APRIL 2006

Two of Britain's royal ladies took a bold approach to spring fashion when they stepped out to church on Easter Sunday. Always one for a striking millinery statement, the Countess of Wessex was sporting a pale cream hat, adorned with a jaunty oversize bloom.

Meanwhile Sophie's mother-in-law, the Queen, had chosen a suit in a vivid shade of turquoise and equally eye-catching headgear for worship at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

The monarch, who seems to be enjoying every moment of the festivities for her 80th birthday this year, waved happily to well-wishers, her face wreathed in smiles as she arrived for morning prayers.

The stylish royals greeted the crowds along with the Duke of Edinburgh, the Countess' husband Prince Edward, and his brother, Prince Andrew. Next weekend the whole family will join Queen Elizabeth at the chapel for a private service to mark her special day on Friday.

St George's holds many dear memories for Britain's most aristocratic household. Just over a year ago the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall celebrated their union with a service of prayer and dedication in the chapel, which was also the setting for the nuptials of Sophie and Edward in June 1999.
