At 3.15pm on Saturday March 30, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother died at the age of 101. Her daughter the Queen, who was at her bedside, announced the news “with the greatest sadness,” adding that her “beloved mother had died peacefully in her sleep at Royal Lodge, Windsor”.
The monarch’s grief found its echo in the hearts of people all over Britain and around the world, for the Queen Mother truly was beloved, and few could remember the time before her charm and charisma had lit up national life. Though her death could hardly have been called unexpected, frail as she had become, it still seemed impossible to imagine the royal family without her.
Her century of life spanned rapidly-changing times, two world wars, royal crises and personal grief. For the full, remarkable story, see HELLO!'s 56-page collectable tribute to 'the nation's grandmother'.
