George Michael has splashed out £25,000 on a controversial portrait of Princess Diana. The chart-topping singer reportedly fell in love with the picture, by London-based artist Stella Vine, after his partner Kenny Goss introduced him to the painter's work.

The piece depicts the late princess in an evening gown with the words "Murdered? Pregnant? Embalmed?" in the background. It has drawn criticism from some circles, but George, who was among the tragic royal's friends, is said to be much taken with its directness.

"He saw it on my website," revealed Stella. "I was inspired to paint it after reading Diana's body was embalmed, destroying any possible evidence she may have been pregnant."

In 1995 the Flawless singer headlined A Concert For Hope, which Diana organised in order to raise money for Aids charities. The princess died in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997.
