Making their first public outing together since returning from their honeymoon, Prince Frederik of Denmark and his wife Princess Mary received a rapturous welcome when they attended the 70th birthday celebrations of Prince Henrik.

Wearing a figure-hugging champagne coloured sheath encrusted with diamante beading, newlywed Mary was all smiles as she accompanied her husband to the festivities in Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens.

Also on hand at the special concert were Prince Joachim and his wife Princess Alexandra, who, like Tasmanian-born Mary, hails from outside the northern European country.

The landmark birthday of the Danish queen's husband was made especially memorable for ordinary Danes by the fact that 1,000 tickets for the event were thrown open to the general public allowing them to mingle with the 350 invited guests.
