King Harald's state funeral was held on 9 September after the former Norwegian monarch passed away at the age of 89 on 28 August. Ahead of the somber event, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark were photographed stepping off the Royal Yacht Dannebrog, ready to attend the service, which is taking place at Oslo Cathedral.

The mother-of-four looked elegant in her black, tailored coat dress, with a black, circular-rimmed hat. She wore black-toned, opaque tights and sleek black high heels. Her famous mane of dark hair was styled in a neat bun.

Funeral dressing is often a formal affair. "For women, all-black, modest clothing - dress or skirt, plus coat if desired - with hemlines falling at or below the knee," Jo Hayes, etiquette expert and founder of EtiquetteExpert.Org, previously told HELLO!.

Jo also explained that women would typically be expected to wear "a black mantilla (also known as a sacred veil, or church veil), or other black head-covering (hat/headpiece) as a sign of respect for both the church and the deceased."

Royals at King Harald's state funeral

Prince William and Princess Anne represented Britain at the state funeral. HELLO! understands that William will be representing King Charles at the funeral, with the sovereign typically not attending the funerals of other heads of state. Anne is due to appear in a personal capacity as the godmother of Crown Prince Haakon.

Other members of the Norwegian royal family, including Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Queen Sonja, Princess Astrid, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, were pictured.

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco were in attendance, and Belgium was represented by King Philippe and his wife, Queen Mathilde. Japan's Emperor Naruhito was presented by Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko.

One controversial attendee was the late King's step-grandson, Marius Borg Høiby, who was convicted of rape back in June. Marius is appealing the sentence, meaning that it's not legally binding, and he has been granted permission to attend the funeral.
