Francesca Bridgerton has emerged as an even rarer jewel this season and she’s caught the eye of one Lord John Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin. Like the rest of the ton, you might be wondering what’s in store for the Bridgerton beauty – will she end up with her dashing new suitor or make a love match elsewhere?

If you’ve already scoured the pages of When He Was Wicked, then you’ll know all too well who Francesca ends up with. But, if you’re none the wiser and privy to a few spoilers then we’ve got the lowdown on her love story…

Francesca's love story in Julia Quinn's book series

Before the sixth book, When He Was Wicked, Francesca had already married the Earl of Kilmartin in a love match. However, at the beginning of the novel, it transpires that she is now a widow, and has been for the past four years while grieving the loss of her husband.

However, her late husband’s cousin, Michael, is one of London’s most infamous bachelors and has always held a torch for Francesca, despite only meeting her for the first time at his cousin’s wedding.

The synopsis reads: “After a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing.”

Michael becomes the new Earl of Kilmartin but goes to stay in India while grieving John, who was also his best friend. Upon deciding that she is ready to remarry and that she wants a baby, and with Michael feeling the pressure to produce an heir, they decide on a pragmatic match - on Francesca’s side, while Michael has been in love with her for years. While we won’t give it all away, no Julia Quinn book would be complete with a happily ever after!

Francesca's love story in the Netflix series

The big question is – will the Netflix series follow the novel? Based on the season three finale, it looks like this won't be the case. Again – spoilers ahead so stop scrolling if you haven't binged the new episodes of Bridgerton

In the grand finale, Eloise is delighted after Francesca invites to her go to Scotland with herself and her new husband, Lord Kilmartin. But a huge twist reveals that Kilmartin’s cousin Michael Stirling has been gender-swapped to Michaela, leaving us with more questions than ever.

Whatever happens, it looks like Francesca's relationships will take a backseat in season four, with fans predicting that Benedict will finally get his romance in the next instalment. Click here to find out why we think the Bridgerton brother is taking the lead.
