Princess Anne was the spitting image of Zara Tindall in sparkly bridesmaid dress – aged 14

As we head towards peak wedding season, we're preparing for Peter Phillips' nuptials with Harriet Sperling at All Saints Church in Cirencester on 6 June.

It's likely that their bridal party will include their daughters from their first marriages: Savannah and Isla Phillips, whom Peter shares with his ex-wife, Autumn, and Georgina, whom Harriet welcomed with ex Antonio St John Sperling.

While we wait with bated breath to see their bridesmaid dresses, we're casting our minds back to when Peter's mother, Princess Anne, was a teenager. Aged 14, the Princess Royal jetted to Athens, where she took on bridesmaid duties for King Constantine II of the Hellenes and Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark's wedding at the Metropolitan Cathedral on 18 September 1964.

Resurfaced photos show Anne glancing over her shoulder as she stood with the other bridesmaids, who all wore similar floor-length white dresses with cropped sheer sleeves, an empire waist embellished with a bow, and an embellished hem with sparkles that caught the light.

While the other bridesmaids had a boat neck, teenager Anne stood out with her more modest rounded neckline with a higher back.

Completing their look, they wore pearl necklaces and floral headpieces, which nestled in Anne's bouffant curled bob.

Her profile looked remarkably similar to her daughter Zara Tindall, who acted as a bridesmaid at a similar age when Lady Armstrong-Jones married Daniel Chatto in 1994.

Royal love story

The late Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip's third cousin Anne-Marie, then 18, married King Charles' second cousin and Prince William's godfather, Constantine, then 24, in September 1964. Their wedding date was moved forward due to the death of Constantine's father King Paul in March 1964.

The couple first crossed paths five years earlier, when Constantine joined his parents on a state visit to Denmark. In May 1962, Anne-Marie acted as bridesmaid to Constantine's sister Sofía, and shared his intentions to marry her.

King Frederik insisted that his then-16-year-old daughter finish her education before she announced her engagement.

Missing wedding dress

Matching her bridesmaids, the 18-year-old bride wore a bateau neck, empire waist wedding dress designed by Danish fashion designer Jorgen Bender.

The bride teamed the gown, which had a 20-foot train, with her Princess Margaret of Connaught's Irish lace veil and the Khedive of Egypt tiara.

While the tiara and veil worn were passed down to other royal brides, Anne-Marie's wedding dress had not been seen until 2023. It was rediscovered among the personal belongings of the Hellenic royal family in Tatoi, alongside the jewels of the Greek Crown.
