George and Amal Clooney's strict vow after getting married

George and Amal Clooney are celebrating 12 years of marriage on 27 September, 2026.

The private couple, who have built a family life together with their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, on an estate in France, tied the knot in 2014 in a star-studded Italian wedding. After they said "I do", George and Amal made a pact to ensure their busy schedules and distance wouldn't be a problem.  

George once revealed that they agreed to not spend more than a week apart. In a 2015 interview with News.com.au, the actor admitted that married life had not been a huge adjustment for him.

"There was nothing tough about it," he said at the time. 

"Our only adjustments are figuring out our schedules. Our deal is that we can't be more than a week apart. So far that's worked out pretty well."

While George and Amal have property around the world, including a home in Lake Como, they mainly call their 425-acre wine estate in Brignoles, France, home. The couple bought the property, called Domaine du Canadel, in 2021 for a reported $8.3 million

The 18th-century mansion has a tennis court, boules pitch, vast gardens, an olive grove, and a 25-acre vineyard. It also comes with a 72-foot shaded swimming pool and a private ornamental lake. The couple and their two children have settled in France and were granted French citizenship by the French government in December.

George and Amal also have an English countryside home in their property portfolio. The 17th-century Grade II listed estate is located in Oxfordshire. While the pair have shared romantic moments on red carpets, they are very private about their home life, with Amal once revealing the great lengths they've gone to ensure privacy for the family.

"Creating private moments and spaces is becoming increasingly difficult," Amal told Glamour in 2025. "But that's also why we entertain a lot at home."

"I now have a phone basket that I use to take everyone's phones away! It's important to get that balance where you have time alone with your family and with your friends, where people feel like you can have a safe and frank exchange."
