Renowned for her on-court fashion statements, tennis star Serena Williams looks set to make another splash at Wimbledon this year if she gets to wear her latest headline-making outfit.
The 22-year-old's white skin-tight top and matching briefs, accessorised with flamboyant diamond earrings and platinum and diamond bellybutton jewellery, drew gasps from the crowd at the Nasdaq 100 Open in Florida this week.
Even Serena, who has a five-year deal with Nike and in the past has played in a wet-look one piece, apparently had reservations about donning the new combo. "Finally the guys (from Nike) told me I should wear it, so I did," she says. "And I love it. It's so comfortable."
Whether the pared down garb will make its debut on the hallowed grounds of the All England Club, which has a reputation for its conservative approach to player apparel, remains to be seen. Samples of what contracted players will wear must be submitted to the club prior to the championship, but Nike has apparently still to present Serena's double whammy for approval.
