And despite appearing to suggest he had no choice but to end the romance, Tre praised his ex as "amazing" and thanked all her "Little Soldiers" for their support.
"Tell the negativity committee that meets inside your head to sit down and shut up! #imalive," he wrote.
"Sometimes against our will life gives us 2 options: losing yourself or losing someone else. Regardless of the situation, don't lose yourself."
The handsome American then hit out at recent tabloid claims that he had been pictured 'twerking' with a Cheryl lookalike in Sydney hours after the split was announced.
"First of all… I don't TWERK! Idiots! #coolstorybro.
"Second… Thank you all for your support. Cheryl is AMAZING as you all know!! #soldierpower."
Fans were shocked when news of Tre and Cheryl's split emerged this week.
According to the Sun, the couple actually called time on their romance back in June, but have remained good friends. They were last photographed together at an American Football match at Wembley in September — leading many to assume their relationship was still on track.
Cheryl, 30, has also taken to Twitter since the split was confirmed, to thank her fans — her 'little soldiers' — for their support.
"Sometimes I just sit here by myself wondering why you're all so kind and nice and caring towards me," she wrote. "It gets overwhelming. #soldiers.
"Thank you for everything, I mean that from the heart. I love you. You're amazing #soldierloveinfulleffect."
