The source spoke out about Khloé's marriage woes on the day she removed her troubled husband's surname from her Twitter handle – exactly four years since they tied the knot.
"She still wants to save their marriage; she wants him to get better, but there is a lot to work out," the source told PEOPLE magazine.
Her basketball star spouse Lamar Odom's drug and alcohol problems have caused problems for the American couple.
However, the source added that Khloe had not foreseen their relationship troubles.
"She never thought she would be in this position," the source explained. "Two years ago she would have thought they'd be happily married with kids.
"It's been so hard to carry this secret and try to save not only Lamar but their marriage. It's taken a toll but she's one fierce lady."
Khloe's recent tweets show that she is going through a difficult time.
She shared a quote from Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland from the main character Alice and The Mad Hatter.
"The Mad Hatter: Have I gone mad?," she quoted.
"Alice: I'm afraid so, you're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are."
The post came hours after husband and wife reportedly held a short meeting at their Tarzana home, before the basketball player took off in his car for his downtown LA loft.
Despite their apparent difficulties, Lamar broke his silence this week to passionately defend Khloé and her family, calling them, "The ONLY ones that have been here consistently 4 me during this dark time."
Despite remaining resolutely silent on her marital problems, Khloé appears to be standing by her man.
Multiple sources have confirmed that husband and wife are in touch and dealing with various issues, including Lamar's addictions and his recent DUI charge.
And, perhaps most importantly, her wedding ring was still in place as she stepped out in Los Angeles this week.
