Madonna has been reaching out to her son Rocco since he left to live with his dad Guy Ritchie last December, and she did so once again on Friday night, during a concert in New Zealand.

The singer broke down in tears before dedicating a song to her eldest son. "There is no love stronger than a mother for her son," she said to the crowd, before dedicating her song La Vie en Rose to him.

The public shout-out comes days after Madonna and her ex-husband Guy Ritchie continued their transatlantic custody battle over their 15-year-old son in court on Wednesday.

Neither of them were present for the court hearing, opting instead to listen in via telephone conference call. The former couple's attorneys agreed that Rocco will for the time being remain in London, where he is enrolled in school.

The dispute began in December when Rocco was ordered by a judge to return Stateside to figure out his living situation. The teen chose not to return, and has instead been residing with his father in London.

These past months have been hard for Madonna, but the singer hasn't lost hope and has posted several touching messages on social media dedicated to her son.

Last month she shared an old photo of herself and Rocco together on Instagram, writing: "Tu me manques", which translates as "I miss you".

She has received a number of supportive messages from fans, who commented telling her to "stay strong", with one adding: "He will always be your son and you always his mother."

In January she seemed genuinely touched to receive a letter of support from fans, who said that they hoped their love could "rescue" her from her struggles. Sharing a photo of the note, Madonna wrote: "Thanks sooooooo much for this! It means a lot to me! One word of kindness, it can save me!"
