Elon Musk has become the world’s first trillionaire. The staggering net worth comes after SpaceX began trading on the NASDAQ exchange on Friday, June 12, 2026, after launching its IPO.
Within hours, the IPO price had risen by 18% to $154 per share. Elon holds an approximate 42% equity stake in SpaceX, as well as 717 million shares in Tesla.
What could you spend $1 trillion on?
A trillion dollars represents one million million dollars, and is an almost impossible number to imagine; if you laid out a stack of $100 bills that added up to $1trillion, they would wrap around the moon and back to Earth over 200 times.
In real-world terms, if you spent $1 million a day, it would still take over 2,700 years to empty the bank account. A trillion dollars could also buy you every single team in the NFL, MLB, and NBA outright - with money left to spend.
Recent research from UC Berkeley and Stanford University shows that $1 trillion would cover the cost of ending extreme poverty worldwide for approximately three years.
A $1 trillion global endowment fund would also offer universal education for all children in low- and middle-income countries for decades.
What is SpaceX?
SpaceX was launched in 2022 by Elon as an aerospace manufacturer and satellite communications company.
It has successfully developed the Starlink global internet network, bringing internet access to remote corners of the world, and has also completed 20 crewed missions into space, working alongside NASA.
Who is Elon Musk?
He has become a controversial figure culturally, however, after purchasing Twitter and rebranding it to X, and working alongside President Donald Trump on the failed DOGE programs that aimed to cut government spending.
His personal life has also become the subject of much discussion; the richest man in the world is father to 14 kids, and the names of his youngest eight children are markedly unusual.
Elon's 14 children
The 54-year-old shares three children – X Æ A-12, Exa Dark Sidrael and Techno Mechanicus – with musician Grimes.
X has become a constant companion of Elon's at public events, a decision which has been criticized by Grimes, who told Vanity Fair that "kids need to stay out of it" and suggested that Elon "is really seeing him as a protégé and bringing him to everything".
He has also welcomed twins Strider and Azure, daughter, Arcadia, and a son, Seldon Lycurgus, with Shivon Zilis. Elon welcomed his youngest child, Romulus, with Ashley St. Clair.
His eldest six children, whom he welcomed with his first wife, Justine Wilson, are Nevada (who passed away as a young baby), twins Griffin and Vivian, Kai, Saxon and Damian.
Vivan's comments
He has no relationship with Vivian, a model who, in 2022, at 18, legally changed her name, citing her gender identity and a desire not to be related to him "in any way, shape or form".
She has also called him a "pathetic manchild" and a "serial adulterer," and spoken publicly about how money and the "desire for power corrupts people from within".
"Achieving that and wanting more is a never-ending cycle of greed and gluttony, where nothing is enough, and you kind of go insane. It turns you into someone different. Which is honestly one of my biggest fears," she told Cosmopolitan.
