Music legend Phil Collins has shared the main regret he has at 75. During a recent interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, the 'In the Air Tonight' hitmaker candidly discussed the breakdown of his marriages.
The musician, who has been married three times, told the host: "I regret to some extent, I have to say, I regret my marriages falling apart. Sometimes I jumped well, one time, I jumped. Two times, I was pushed.
"But, I wouldn't have written it like that," he continued. "But on the other hand, I got five fantastic kids that I wouldn't have if that hadn't happened. So I have to balance it."
Despite these failed relationships, Phil emphasised that he "always tried to be there" for his children and that he "didn't want to be married three times," adding, "You don't go into life thinking that."
Reflecting on the breakdown of his first marriage, Phil explained that the relationship fell apart while he was touring with his band, Genesis.
"Genesis did, in one year, I think three American tours, two European tours, and a tour of Japan," explained the singer. "And when I ended up getting separated from my first wife, the guys in the band said, 'Well why didn’t you tell us? We'd have stopped it.' But that’s easy to say in retrospect. I was gone, and we grew apart."
Phil Collins' relationships and family life
Phil married his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1975. He adopted Andrea's daughter Joely, and welcomed a son named Simon during their marriage, which ended in 1980.
Phil said 'I do' for a second time with Jill Tavelman. The former couple, who were married from 1984 to 1996, share a daughter, actress Lily Collins.
During Phil's third marriage to Orianne Cevey, which lasted from 1999 to 2006, he welcomed two sons, Nicholas and Matthew.
Reflecting on his close bond with his family, Phil recalled the deeply moving Christmas they spent together last year.
"We had lunch together, we had dinner together. After dinner, we all stayed around the table and told stories. It was like what some families do every year, but we'd never done. And it was a monumental thing," he revealed.
"It was wonderful to hear their stories of how they feared they wouldn't see me again," the singer noted, referencing his health struggles and hospitalisation. "And Lily, for example, she just burst into tears, because she now has a child and she said, 'I never thought that my child would get to know her grandfather'… It was very touching, very moving."
