Aidan Turner is back on our screens in Netflix's hit political thriller, The Diplomat. The 43-year-old actor plays British spy Callum Ellis in the Emmy-nominated series, which stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, the US Ambassador to the UK who continually finds herself juggling intense international crises with her turbulent marriage to Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
Aidan has been a regular fixture on our TV screens since landing his breakout role in the BBC's supernatural drama, Being Human, after which he cemented his leading man status in the sweeping period drama, Poldark. His recent TV credits include the smash hit romance drama, Rivals, and the Prime Video series, Fifteen-Love.
Away from his stellar acting career, the Irish actor seemingly prefers to live a quiet life with his wife Caitlin FitzGerald, and their son, who was born in 2022.
Aidan Turner's ultra-private life with wife and son
Aidan is married to American actress Caitlin FitzGerald, who is perhaps best known for her roles in the period drama Masters of Sex, the Starz series Sweetbitter, and HBO's acclaimed drama Succession.
During an interview with Stylist in 2024, Aidan offered a glimpse into his home life with Caitlin and their young son, revealing that the family had settled in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.
When asked to share something that brings him joy, Aidan, who hails from Clondalkin, Ireland, told the publication: "My wife and I live really close to a doughnut shop here in Nova Scotia called Vandal Doughnuts. They do a Homer Simpson one which made really happy the other day."
Clearly a devoted family man, Aidan expressed his love of domestic life when speaking to Goss.ie ahead of the release of Rivals in 2024. "Married life is great," he said, adding: "I love married life."
Aidan's family life
Aidan and Caitlin didn't confirm the arrival of their child publicly; however, the couple were spotted strolling in London with a pushchair in early 2022, and it's been reported that he was born in January that year.
In July 2023, the Leonardo actor opened up to the Irish Independent about balancing fatherhood with his career, explaining how he and Caitlin share parenting duties around their busy schedules.
"My wife is also working at the moment," he said. "She's in The Crucible at The Gielgud Theatre. So straight after today, I'll have to sprint back and take over from the nanny."
During an interview with The Times in May about his summer stint in the National Theatre's production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Aidan revealed the challenges of juggling family life with his stage role.
On his decision to accept the part, he said: "I thought, 'Doing a play? [Expletive], yeah. That'll be fun. It's just an evening show; your days are free.' Your days are not free. No way. Not one little bit.
"I forgot that. I seem to forget that every time I do a show. And I have a child. I have a family. A relationship," he added.
Aidan and Caitlin's relationship timeline
Aidan and Caitlin confirmed their romance in 2019, but have kept their relationship pretty low-key since then.
They met while filming The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot and tied the knot in Italy in 2020.
Due to the restrictions surrounding the pandemic at the time, their wedding was a small and intimate affair. The ceremony was so secret, it wasn't confirmed that the couple had tied the knot until the following year.
Aidan later spoke of the nuptials while promoting his ITV drama, The Suspect.
"It was very private, there was almost nobody there," he said during an appearance on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio in September 2022.
"There were six people but no family and a couple of friends that were in Italy already because it was right in the middle of lockdown," he continued. "A couple of people from the show [The Suspect], because I was shooting over there, had to translate and do all those kinds of things at the actual ceremony itself, for legality reasons. But yeah, it was tiny and beautiful. It was quite a special thing."
