Mollie King, former Saturday’s star turned fashion blogger, caught up with Hello! Fashion Monthly at this year’s Coachella Festival. Known for her flawless blonde locks and effortless style, it's no wonder she fits in with the LA cool crowd. This year she worked with ghd to debut many of the festival hair trends we can expect to see over the course of the summer. Find out how the blonde beauty achieves her own hairstyles, what inspires her boho-esque festival fashion choices and why her motto is "go hard or go home!"

Mollie likes to push the fashion and beauty boundaries when she's at music festivals

What do you love most about Coachella festival & who do you want to see perform?

I love how Coachella has got such a chilled out and fun vibe, plus the setting is incredible and the sun is always shining. The music acts are always amazing too and the fact that when you walk into the festival and see the iconic Coachella wheel, you know that you’ve arrived. I was most excited to see Lady Gaga! And then DJ Snake and Martin Garrix as well. The line-up was great this year!

Blonde or brunette? Have you ever, or would you ever, go brunette?

I am definitely a blonde! I once tried on one of the girls in the band’s dark extensions in the front of my hair and it looked terrible so I wouldn’t try it again - unless I tried low lights so that it was dark underneath but still light on top. I definitely wouldn’t go dark all over.

What’s your favourite go-to hairstyle?

My two go-to hair looks are a relaxed wave or sleek and straight; both can be easily done using the ghd Platinum Tropic Sky Styler which is my go-to for styling my hair. Finish with a spritz of the ghd Final Fix Hairspray too for ultimate hold; it keeps hair in place all day and all night.

What’s your day to day hair styling routine?

I am good at styling my hair myself, apart from ponytails, I am not good at doing ponytails! My two go-to hair looks are a relaxed wave or sleek and straight; both can be easily done using the ghd Platinum Tropic Sky Styler which is my go-to for styling my hair.

Best haircare tip you’ve been given?

For the perfect wavy hair, leave the ends out so that the waves are more beachy than bouncy. I use the ghd Platinum Tropic Sky Styler to create beachy waves and use the ghd Root Lift Spray for added volume and texture. And for keeping blonde hair healthy I make sure that I have a good hair treatment mask put on so that my hair doesn’t dry out - I always do this at the same time as when I have my highlights done, to nourish and repair my hair.

Best beauty/make-up tip you’ve been given?

I’ve experimented with hair colour at Coachella and I’ve learnt that if you’re not too confident, have the colour at the back or at the top, with your natural colour at the front framing your face, it’s a good way to ease into coloured hair for the first time. Then, blotting papers as essential to use throughout the day so that you don’t look caked in powder. And also to create a pin curls in the front of the hair to maintain volume while you're getting ready, then un-pin it before you go out - your hair won’t drop half as quickly then.

Festival cool: The star likes to rock both relaxed waves and sleek hair looks, depending on her mood

If you were going to shake up your hairstyle, or colour, what would you go for?

I would love to do a white platinum blonde colour, it would be a bit more rock and roll than my current hair colour, but I worry too much about the condition of my hair so haven’t tried it! I don’t want my hair to end up too dry and brittle.

Tell us about this year’s festival fashion outfit inspiration

I definitely push the boundaries more in terms of fashion and beauty at festivals. There is a festival look that I gravitate to. For my clothes I often choose outfits that I wouldn’t wear in the city. Festivals allow me to experiment and be more bohemian and less structured with my fashion. I always go for more floaty clothes than I usually wear, as I’m a city girl so dress more structured at home. I don’t normally wear a lot of jewellery whereas at festivals I go for it; when it comes to festival fashion and beauty you have to go hard or go home! I definitely need flat shoes for all of the walking though. For festivals I always embrace a more boho look than I normally do - I’m a city girl really so at festivals I can experiment and be more boho.

"When it comes to festival fashion and beauty you have to go hard or go home," says Mollie.

What SS17 trends are you most enjoying?

I always go for stripes which are classic year on year for spring/summer no matter the trends. At the moment I love all of the sheer fabrics as seen at the Chloe show. I like really feminine, bohemian clothes but then at the same time I also love the contrast of androgynous, oversized tailored trousers.
