Ever since Margot Robbie donned her now-iconic Armani Privé 'naked' dress for the UK premiere of her movie A Big Bold Beautiful Journey in London, transparent gowns of all varieties haven't left the fashion radar.

A plethora of celebrities have donned the seemingly risqué dress since then, from Lily Allen to Rihanna. The style is coined 'naked' due to the illusion of bare skin.

This is often achieved through transparent fabric or tasteful touches of detail such as appliqués or lace. The barely-there style creates the illusion of subtle nudity while clothed, and iterations of the look have been around for several decades.

In 1983, the late Princess Diana was pictured in Ottawa, Canada, during an official visit. Looking as resplendent as ever, the royal donned a modern, see-through suit designed by Jasper Conran.

Although the peplum top looked fully lined, the skirt was not, and when the light hit the fabric, it appeared totally see-through, albeit chic.

Diana's infamous see-through skirt moment

One of the most iconic photographs of Princess Diana was taken in 1980, when she was snapped wearing a skirt that also appeared transparent, though this was an unintentional fashion faux pas.

Then known by her maiden name, Lady Diana Spencer was in the early stages of dating the then-Prince Charles and posed for photos at the Young England Kindergarten, where she worked, wearing a sheer white skirt from UK brand Laura Ashley. Unfortunately, she wasn't wearing a petticoat and the sun shone through, giving the style a sheer finish.

"I didn't do it on purpose, I promise. I didn't do it to embarrass her, but it was such a good picture you couldn't not publish it," photographer Arthur Edwards told TODAY in 2020.

"Everybody doesn't believe this, but it is the gospel truth," he added, "Halfway through, the sun came out and revealed those beautiful legs." The photographer, who worked at The Sun at the time, revealed that "this amazing silhouette picture" didn't last long.

"In many ways, I'm glad the sun came out because it made it an iconic picture," he mused.
