The Duchess of Edinburgh looked incredible last week as she visited Helsinki City Hall in Finland. Accompanying her husband, Prince Edward, the blonde royal opted for sharp tailoring, stepping out in a Gabriela Hearst co-ord for the occasion.

The gorgeous tailored set featured one of the trending prints of the season, heritage check, and was crafted in a blend of wool and cashmere. The classic jacket and skirt set had a price tag of £2.8k, and we are sure the mother of two will wear it again in seasons to come.

Channelling Princess Diana

Instagram account Royal Style Diary noted that Sophie's jacket looked almost identical to one the late Princess Diana wore on her honeymoon in Balmoral in 1981.

The mother of Prince William and Prince Harry posed alongside the then-Prince Charles on the banks of the River Dee in the grounds of Balmoral Castle, Scotland whilst enjoying their honeymoon.

Nodding to the Highlands with her look, Diana wore a jacket and matching pencil skirt custom-designed by couturier Bill Pashley.

Bill Pashley designed Diana's ensemble

This ensemble signified the 'Sloane Ranger' look - a fashion ethos that Diana herself was credited with making famous. The term 'Sloane Ranger' was coined in the 1980s and originally described the affluent residents living around London's Sloane Square. It became an affectionate moniker for a stylish circle defined by quintessential wardrobe staples, from tweed blazers and crisp tailored shirts to cardigans, pearls and even Wellington boots.

How to embrace the heritage check

Tartan and checks are big trends for AW26. The classic print is back on our radar now that the weather is chillier, and has been recently put on the map thanks to Claudia Winkleman, who loves to wear the look on The Traitors.

From flannel shirts to sleek coats, the striking check is here to stay. There are a variety of jackets very like Diana's and Sophie's available on the high street right now.

Nutmeg at Morrisons has a doppelgänger look for just £45. Combining the same timeless beige and brown check with a modern finish, it's ideal for this time of year.

Nobody's Child also has a similar, bomber jacket-style take on the trend, which is both on-trend yet archetypal.

The key is to make the jacket the focus of your outfit, and try not to mix it up with other conflicting prints. The classic look is one that will never date, so a jacket like this is a great investment.
