Elfin actress Winona Ryder has had to pull out of her latest film due to illness. The 29-year-old actress flies back to the States today, after she contracted a stomach bug that landed her in hospital in London. Now producers of low budget British movie Lily And The Secret Planting are searching for a replacement – and Kate Winslet is at the top of their list.

The Dracula star fell ill after attending the London premiere of Planet Of The Apes last week, but was already looking unwell at the showbiz function. Doctors ordered her to rest for a considerable period of time, after tests showed that she had a gastric infection. Winona’s parents have flown out to the British capital to take her back to L.A. so she can recuperate.

The actress had struggled through four days of provisional shoots on the set of the £3 million film in Woolwich, but was clearly not well – at one point, she was seen doubled up in pain. The film’s producer Sarah Radcliffe said: “We have had to suspend filming and start recasting. It is awfully sad and terrible bad luck because to get somebody of her calibre would have been great for the British film industry.”

Kate, the star of Titanic, has been in the news this week for a dramatic weight loss following the birth of her daughter Mia.
