What to expert from The Northumbria Mysteries

Set against the sweeping Northumberland coastline and its surrounding market towns, the series follows an unlikely crime-solving duo.

Robson stars as Joe Ruby, whose life has been "shaped by mistakes, regrets and missed opportunities," while Liz White (Life on Mars, Unforgotten) plays Oxford-educated DI Rose O'Connell, a "rarefied intellectual, a deep thinker with a brilliant mind and an ice-cool disposition".

The synopsis continues: "In a classic odd-couple pairing, Joe and Rose combine their talents as they frustrate, confound and ultimately surprise one another while unravelling a series of compelling crime mysteries."

The show comes from Newcastle-based Lonesome Pine Productions, the company behind twisty dramas like The Feud, The Inheritance and the Fortune.

Teasing the plot, Robson previously said: "Set against this amazing backdrop, you have this really unusual, likeable and oddball pairing, who slowly realise they have a connection.

"They're trying to work out what that connection is and then later on through the series, what to do with that connection."

Meanwhile, Lesley Douglas, executive producer for Lonesome Pine Productions, said she "could not be happier to have Robson Green lead the cast".

"Working with the BBC to realise these characters has been a labour of love," she said.

Who else stars in The Northumbria Mysteries?

A cast of familiar faces join Robson and Liz on the show, including Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Kevin Whately (Lewis), Gurjeet Singh (Ackley Bridge) and Chris Gascoyne (Coronation Street).
