If you grew up watching 80s cop dramas, Stepfanie Kramer's face will be instantly familiar. She was the sharp, no-nonsense Sgt. Dee Dee McCall in Hunter, and for many fans, she will always be the detective who held her own beside Fred Dryer's Rick Hunter.

But there is far more to Stepfanie than that one role. She has acted for more than 40 years, with appearances in some of television's best-loved shows, and built a second career as a singer-songwriter. Now 70, she is still part of the industry. Curious what she looks like now? Read on to find out...

Her early acting career

Stepfanie's career began in the late 1970s, while she was still at drama school. She landed guest spots on some of the decade's most popular television shows, including Starsky & Hutch, Dynasty, Bosom Buddies and Knots Landing.

She trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts/West, and later returned to the school as a guest instructor, passing on what she'd learned. In 1983, she stepped into a leading role in the NBC sitcom We Got It Made, a sign of her success to come.

The actress landed the role that would define her career in 1984. Hunter followed police officer Rick Hunter and Sgt. Dee Dee McCall as they chased down Los Angeles's most notorious criminals, with Charles Hallahan completing the main cast.

It ran from 1984 to 1991 across seven seasons, and Stepfanie starred in six of them, appearing in 130 episodes. The series won two awards and earned seven further nominations, including three Primetime Emmys. Remarkably, she admitted to Jay Leno in 1989 that she never believed the show would last as long as it did.

A move into music

Acting was never her only passion. As early as 1986, Stepfanie revealed she was working on a rock album with Mike Post, the composer behind the Hunter music, and hinted it could be released the following year. It never materialised, but her musical ambitions didn't disappear. In 1990, she announced she was leaving the show, a decision that was made to focus on her music career.

Stepfanie explained in a television news interview that she had been fortunate to act, write and direct while on Hunter, and that it was "time for me to move on to the next phase of my life, both professionally and personally." Her debut album, One Dream, followed on 12 October 1999, featuring ten adult contemporary tracks, most of them written by Stepfanie herself. Her second, The Great American Song Book, arrived in early 2008.

Away from the cameras, Stepfanie's biggest role has been motherhood. She married Mark Richards on 24 May 1992, and although the couple divorced in February 2001, they share a daughter, Lily Richards, born in 1994.

Lily has followed her mother into the creative world as an actress, writer and director. According to Stepfanie's official website, her daughter is the greatest production she has ever been involved in.

She also slipped back into Dee Dee McCall's shoes for the 2003 TV movie Hunter: Back in Force, reuniting with Fred Dryer.
