Several stars from the original show, which ran for 14 seasons and was a ratings smash, have returned to the spin-off, including Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou and Marisa Ramirez. And others are likely to feature in season two.

The one central character to not return so far? Tom Selleck, who played Reagan family patriarch Frank Reagan throughout the original show's run.

Will Tom Selleck return for Boston Blue?

Ahead of the second season's premiere, Boston Blue showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier spoke with ScreenRant about their attempts to get Tom, now 81, back on board.

"It remains wish fulfillment on our part," Margolis explained, noting that while they've had conversations with the Magnum P.I. star, it's all about the right material that would convince him to return, plus scheduling.

"We would love to have Tom, and to get to write for Tom would be a dream come true. Obviously, it's always going to come down to what's the right story to tell, and does it make sense to have Frank there for the character? It's a long, never-ending conversation, let's put it that way," he continued.

So far, it doesn't look like Tom Selleck is on board to reprise his role

"Because as much as we love Tom, we know how busy he is. It would just be a dream come true. So we're always trying to think of ways to make that story possible."

Fellow showrunner Sonnier echoed the same sentiment, adding: "It's got to be the right story, though. That's sort of the thing is we don't ever want to do it just for the sake of doing it. The right story that brings Frank into the world of Boston Blue will present itself, and when it does, it's going to be an episode of television that we can only dream to write."

Tom's reaction to the Blue Bloods spin-off

Separately, Donnie previously told Parade that despite not being back for the show yet, Tom is all for it. "Of course, I spoke to Tom the minute I was deciding if this was something I was going to do. And I can't really get into the details of those conversations, but he's been very supportive," he shared.

"I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes," he continued.

"Tom's always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I'd love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it."
