Inspired by the world of skincare, our hair care routines are packing in ever more steps to keep our locks hydrated and glossy. We're also paying closer attention to the scalp, which plays the main role in ensuring hair grows strong and healthy.

But now that our hair care choices are expanding, a vital question arises: when should we apply each product? Getting it right matters, as experts say the order you apply your products truly changes the end result.

What to do before washing your hair

According to the experts we spoke to, the starting point should be to create a personalised routine adapted to the needs of your specific hair type. For example, if your hair tends to get greasy, you might find a scalp exfoliant helpful as a pre-wash step.

If you are concerned about hair loss or want to strengthen your locks, meanwhile, you should take a different approach. "Use a specific serum or oil daily, preferably at night," advises top stylist Sonia De Teresa of Madrid's Luis&Tachi salons.

The order in which you apply hair products to your hair is key

In-shower layering: Should you apply hair mask or conditioner first?

Your shampoo is the hero product of this routine, though it's worth noting that its primary job is to cleanse the scalp rather than the hair strands themselves. That's why you should massage it thoroughly into the scalp. When it comes to caring for your mid-lengths and ends, we have two dedicated products—and only one correct order of application.

Expert tip: If a hair mask is part of your routine, apply it and rinse before using your conditioner for best results

As the hairstylist explains, "The mask should always be applied before the conditioner, as it's the treatment that delivers deep nutrition, repair and hydration to the hair fibre. Following up with conditioner then helps to seal the hair cuticle and lock in those benefits."

Damp hair styling: Heat protectant vs leave-in conditioner

On damp hair, "it's advisable to apply a heat protectant if you're planning to use heat tools, as well as an oil or leave-in conditioner to nourish the hair and leave it feeling soft," says the hair expert.

She adds: "It's important to understand the difference between a leave-in conditioner and a heat protectant. If the conditioner doesn't offer thermal protection, it can't replace a protectant. However, many modern heat protectants also double as leave-in treatments, providing hydration and care."

Some heat protectants double as leave-in conditioners

Therefore, if you have to choose just one product, De Teresa recommends opting for a the protectant, as it safeguards hair against heat damage while delivering benefits similar to a leave-in conditioner. "Once your hair is dry or styled, a few drops of serum will add shine, tame frizz and seal the ends," she concludes.

The ultimate 3-step haircare checklist for glossy, healthy locks

  • Shampoo: Just as crucial as the rest of your routine, your shampoo can be swapped depending on the state of your hair and scalp. However, it's always best to opt for sulphate- and paraben-free formulas.
  • Hair mask or conditioner: Pharmacist Héctor Núñez, founder of Cosmetocrítico, points out that using both isn't always necessary. "Unless you've gone overboard with bleach or use heat tools daily, a conditioner is usually more than enough." For coloured, highlighted or damaged hair, however, he does recommend using a hair mask, as it offers a richer, more intensive treatment.
  • Heat protectant: An absolute must, according to De Teresa, because "as well as shielding hair from heat damage, it delivers extra hydration and care."
