David, who is currently celebrating his milestone birthday in Marrakech, has long been a friend of the Cambridges. He and William have teamed up on wildlife campaigns in the past, and the football legend attended William and Kate's wedding in 2011.

Ahead of the arrival of the new Princess, the dad-of-four offered advice to his friends, saying they should "get some more sleep before this little one arrives". Speaking at Victoria's New York Fashion Week show in September, he also praised the royal couple's parenting skills.

"Obviously William I've known known for quite a few years, and William is such a great person, such a great dad," said David. "Catherine is exactly the same. She's a great mum and obviously with the commitments that they have, to be a great mum and dad is pretty incredible."

Apart from David's, 2 May boasts a long roster of recognisable birthdays, everyone from acclaimed musicians to up-and-coming comedians. Take a look at who else shares a birthday with the little royal:

Smile singer Lily Allen, fashion maven Donatella Versace, The Good Wife actress Christine Baranski Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson The Office star Ellie Kemper and Bianca Jagger are just some of the famous faces who share the little Princess' special day.

In addition, May 2 was also a birthday for a historic royal figure: Catherine the Great. The empress was the most renowned and longest-ruling female leader of Russia, from 1729 to 1796.

There were other big markers for this day, from great (Tennessee Williams won the Pulitzer for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) to ghastly (Anne Boleyn was arrested and taken to the Tower of London).

Perhaps most notably, in 1945, the Soviet Union announced the fall of Berlin and the Allies announced the surrender of Nazi troops in Italy.

On the lighter side: On this day in 1982, The Weather Channel debuted.
