When Prince William tied the knot with Kate Middleton in April 2011 royal wedding mania swept the globe.More than two years later the excitement continues as a slice of the couple's wedding cake has sold for £2,597.The piece of William and Kate's exquisite cake, which was created by Fiona Cairns, was snapped up by a royal fan at an auction in Beverly Hills, California.
Following tradition, a tier of the Duke and Duchess's wedding cake was presented at Prince George's christening on 23 October.Guests were treated to a slice of the sweet treat yet again as William and Kate celebrated George's special day with the fruitcake that was cut from the top of their eight-tiered wedding cake.Several edible mementos from royal weddings have been sold over the years. In 2011 yet another piece of cake from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's fruit cake went on sale. The slice came in a unique commemorative tin and included a compliment card from Prince Charles and Camilla.
Three other segments of royal wedding cake were also sold in the same auction. One from the 1981 marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, another from Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson's wedding in 1986 and a slice of the original cake from the Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips' big day. In July 2012 some toast that was taken from Prince Charles and Diana's wedding breakfast fetched £230 at an auction.
