Sarah Ferguson has taken herself fully out of the limelight amid her ex-husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's very public fall from grace. After 18 years of living together, the former couple have gone their separate ways with Andrew holed up at Marsh Farm in Sandringham and Sarah left without a permanent home. It is clear that the mother-of-two is now trying to distance herself from Andrew despite previously stating they were the "happiest divorced couple in the world".
Andrew Lownie, author of the book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, which documents Andrew and Sarah’s downfall, has lifted the lid on what he thinks is going through Sarah's mind right now. "They were kind of joined together – them against the world – and that's now clearly fractured. I think she feels that he's toxic and that he’s going to destroy her branding opportunities, so it’s time to go off on her own," he wrote.
Ingrid Seward, the editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, points out that she believes the respect is no longer there from Sarah's side. She exclusively told HELLO!: "He embarrassed her with the way he spoke to people, and I think she lost respect for him. She is very charming and would never speak down to someone she considered her inferior, but Andrew did, and she hated that. He was very unsophisticated."
United front in 2025
The former couple did put on a united front less than a year ago for the funeral of Katharine, Duchess of Kent, which was held at Westminster Cathedral on 16 September 2025. This was the last time they were pictured side-by-side; however, we do know that they both attended the christening of their granddaughter Athena, Princess Beatrice’s youngest daughter, on 12 December 2025 at St James's Palace.
Living at Royal Lodge
When the divorcees remained living together, the press were intrigued by the unique arrangement and speaking to USA Today, Sarah candidly explained: "We live in the same house, but then, it's a big house, so that’s ok. But I think it's really good that we believe in compromise and communication and compassion. And family."
It was in February of this year that Andrew finally relinquished his keys to Royal Lodge, and the disgraced royal moved to Charles' Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where he has now taken up permanent residence at Marsh Farm. Royal Lodge will hold an array of memories for both Andrew and Sarah as it is where their two children, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, were raised. Their grandchildren also often frequented the property, and made full use of the impressive Wendy house in the garden, which once was a gift for Queen Elizabeth II, and is now a royal heirloom.
