Royal family 20 July latest: King Charles's final meeting with Keir Starmer pictured as Andy Burnham becomes Prime Minister

Get ready for a busy one as we'll be covering all the news as Andy Burnham becomes Prime Minister, appointed by King Charles. 

We're also expecting to see Queen Camilla and Princess Anne today.

Prince Harry has appeared on James Corden's Fox Show, After Hours With James Corden. 

Taking place just hours after the World Cup final, they discussed playing "soccer" at school, with James joking that Harry's school, Eton College, was "too posh" for it. 

Harry said: "Well, I played football, why are you calling it soccer? 

"It was such a posh school that everything was an option. There was a football team."

He also admitted he was rather good at the game and was on the "first team" in prep school.  

However, he admitted: "And then I went to the bigger school, and I ended up on the E team. Big A team, down to E team. So that didn't feel very good."

Our US royal correspondent Alex Hurtado visited the stunning penthouse located on the Upper East Side in New York City. 

The Mark Hotel is certainly a venue fit for royalty and it served as the backdrop for her 2019 baby shower when she was pregnant with Prince Archie. 

The 16-story neo-Italian Renaissance, landmark building, located on the corner of 77th Street and Madison Avenue in Manhattan, was designed by architects Schwartz & Gross in 1926. The property offers 106 rooms, 44 suites and three penthouses. 

The festivities on Meghan's day included flower arranging, with the flowers later donated to charity. 

"My girlfriends surprised me with a really beautiful baby shower in New York," the Suits alum recalled in her and Harry's 2022 Netflix docuseries. 

"They're like, 'We're going to shower her with love and shower her baby"...and boy did they in style!"

The King has arrived at Buckingham Palace, according to the BBC. 

The Royal Standard flag has been flown overhead, meaning he is in residence. When the King is elsewhere, the Union Jack flag flies as usual. 

The Royal Standard represents the Sovereign and is flown when he's in residence at a royal palace, and is also flown on his car on official journeys, and on aircraft when on the ground. 

Sir Keir Starmer is expected imminently outside 10 Downing Street to give his resignation. 

He will then travel to Buckingham Palace to meet the King for a private audience. 

Sir Keir will offer his resignation, and the King will accept it, with incoming PM Andy Burnham arriving later.

Sir Keir Starmer said he would "close the book" on his time as Prime Minister, adding “my work is done” as he prepared to see the King to offer his resignation. 

He said "I go with a smile and I go proud of everything that we have achieved" as he concluded his final speech as Prime Minister. 

Sir Keir said he wishes Andy Burnham “every success” ahead of handing over to the incoming prime minister.

King Charles has officially accepted Keir Starmer's resignation following a private audience at Buckingham Palace. 

It's expected that they will have reflected on their time together with private moments. 

There will be time for a more informal conversation about events such as the US state visit, alongside family moments. 

It's understood that Sir Keir and the King had a positive relationship, since he was appointed Prime Minister in 2024. 

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.

“Lady Starmer was also received by The King."

We now have a picture of King Charles's final meeting with Sir Keir Starmer at Buckingham Palace. 

They have been seen shaking hands in the Chinese Drawing Room, the King's temporary audience room due to the reservicing. 

The meeting appears to be a positive one. Only a couple of images were released and few details given due to the private nature of the meeting. 

Sir Keir, Lady Victoria, and their children are believed to still be inside the Palace. Sir Keir and his wife have sought to protect their children's privacy, so no pictures will be released. 

Charles will shortly meet with incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham. 

Sir Keir Starmer has officially left Buckingham Palace, bringing his time as Prime Minister to an end. He is once more an MP. 

Andy Burnham has made his way into Buckingham Palace before an audience with the King and returning to Downing Street.

He arrived in a huge convoy of cars after months of preparation, before entering the quadrangle, with the gravel swept in preparation for his arrival. 

He stepped out of his car with his wife, Marie-France, before making his way into the Palace. Like Keir Starmer, he will meet the King in the Chinese Dining Room, an ornate room currently used for audiences during renovations. 

Charles will ask him to form a government. The two men will chat and think about priorities for the upcoming time in office.

King Charles has officially appointed Andy Burnham as the UK's new Prime Minister. 

Mr Burnham is the fourth Prime Minister of his reign - after Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and Sir Keir Starmer. 

Buckingham Palace said in statement: "His Majesty received in audience the Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP and requested him to form a new Administration. The Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP accepted The King’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.

"Ms Marie-France van Heel was also received by His Majesty."

King Charles and new Prime Minister Andy Burnham don't know each other that well, but they have met on a number of occasions.

Charles and Andy Burnham were pictured together in March, when the King visited The Renew Hub in Greater Manchester. 

They will work closely together over the coming months, including a weekly meeting and state occasions such as banquets and visits. 

We're heading into the summer break, with the King heading to Balmoral in the coming days. 

At the end of the summer, the Prime Minister and his family are typically invited to Balmoral, offering a chance for them to get to know one another ahead of the autumn term and return to regular engagements.

Good afternoon, royal fans! I'm taking over from Eleanor for an afternoon of royal news, starting with the latest on King Charles.

It's been a busy start to the day for Charles after meeting with Sir Keir Starmer at Buckingham Palace and appointing Andy Burnham as the UK's new Prime Minister.

For his next stop, the monarch has headed to Cambridge on a solo engagement. The royal stopped by the Cambridge Central Mosque, which is notably Europe's first Eco-Mosque. 

The mosque, which opened to the public in 2019, is recognised for its architecture, environmental leadership and as a place of community engagement. 

Charles was greeted and pictured shaking hands upon his arrival in Cambridge this afternoon.

While King Charles is in Cambridge today, Queen Camilla has visited a charity she has been a patron of for 20 years in Norfolk. 

Camilla stopped by the Emmaus Norfolk and Waveney residential centre in Bungay, which helps those experiencing homelessness turn their lives around by providing accommodation, therapy and practical work experience. 

The Queen spoke of the "brilliant" work the charity does as she met with human rights activist and former hostage, Sir Terry Waite, who is president of Emmaus UK, as well as with staff and supporters and women in the charity's women’s project. 

During her visit, Camilla toured the women's centre and visited the new ‘Book Nook’, which has been set up at the centre in conjunction with her literary charity, Queen’s Reading Room. 

"I think you can probably see from everybody's faces that we're just incredibly proud [of the Queen’s visit]. It just meant the world, it was fantastic for all of us here, and particularly for the women in the women's project," Norfolk branch’s chef executive, Cecile Roberts said. 

"It was lovely to see those women who have been enabled, through that therapeutic intervention, to speak so clearly, and in such an empowered way, with Her Majesty, that was really lovely to see. I felt, particularly proud."

After travelling to the UK earlier this month for the one-year-to-go events ahead of the 2027 Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham, Prince Harry has commented on a "defining" moment for the international sporting event. 

The Invictus Games Foundation has announced Daejeon, Republic of Korea, will host the 2029 event, becoming the first Asian country selected to do so. 

Prince Harry said: "Today's announcement is a defining moment for the Invictus Movement. We are delighted to announce Daejeon, South Korea as the host of the 2029 Invictus Games and, on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation, we are so excited to work together."

He added: "As the first Asian nation selected to host the Games, the Republic of Korea represents an exciting new chapter in our journey to ensure that more wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans can benefit from the power of sport and the strength of the Invictus community."

Prince George is set to follow in his father's footsteps in September as he begins his secondary education at Eton College, the boarding school Prince William and Prince Harry both attended. 

But before he embarks on a new chapter, the young royal will spend the summer with his family. 

The Waleses have already kicked off the summer holidays fun with George joining his sister, Princess Charlotte, and their parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, for the final day of the All England Lawn Tennis Club's annual championships at Wimbledon on 12 July.

Prince William has paid tribute to English former footballer and manager, Kevin Keegan, who passed away at age 75 following a cancer battle. 

"Incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Kevin Keegan," William, who is the royal patron and former president of England's Football Association, penned on Instagram. 

"A truly remarkable footballer and manager who inspired generations with his talent, passion and love of the game. Above all, he will be remembered as a kind and generous man."

He continued: "Our thoughts are with his family and all who knew him. W."

Kevin confirmed in June that the cancer had reached stage four. His family announced his death on Monday. "Kevin had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments," the statement read. 

“A double Ballon d’Or winner, Kevin was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin’s incredible medical team for all their support. This is a hugely difficult time, and they are requesting space and privacy.”

James Middleton's son Inigo is growing up so fast!

James took to Instagram over the weekend to celebrate his dog Isla's fourth birthday with a heartwarming photo of his son, now two. James and his wife, Alizee Thevenet, welcomed their son in September 2023. 

Inigo looked adorable in a navy and white knitted jumper over a red gingham shirt, paired with blue trousers and hiking trainers as he sat next to the family's two golden retrievers, Mabel and Isla. 

"Too much cuteness in one photo!" one person commented on the post, while another remarked it was "the most adorable photo". 

Inigo turned two last September, which his father celebrated with a sweet social media tribute. "We love you as much as you love Mabel….and that is a lot. And Ella is saying hello today too," James wrote, including a mention of his late dog Ella who passed away in January 2023.

The Duchess of Kent passed away in September 2025 at age 92. Nearly a year on from her death, it has been revealed the royal left behind a huge fortune in her will.

Probate records published on Monday revealed that she left £1,433,696 in the UK, according to the Daily Mail.

While the majority will go to her three children with her husband Prince Edward, Duke Of Kent, £10,000 will go to her charity, Future Talent, and a sum of £5,000 to each of her nine godchildren. 

The Duchess of Kent was mother to George Windsor, 64, Lady Helen Taylor, 62, and Lord Nicholas Windsor, 55. 

The royal's funeral took place on 16 September 2025, with senior members of the royal family, including King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales, in attendance.
