The Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Edinburgh have long been known to enjoy a close bond, and the same appears to be true for Princess Charlotte and her great-aunt. During the family's appearance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow over the weekend, Sophie and Charlotte shared a particularly sweet moment, offering another glimpse of their warm bond.

During a track cycling event, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were reunited with the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children. As they took their seats, Duchess Sophie warmly greeted the family, sharing a sweet kiss with Princess Charlotte before catching up with the others.

Charlotte happily returned the hug and smiled, although her attention was quickly drawn back to the action on the track.

For the outing, Duchess Sophie looked elegant in a patterned white blouse paired with a denim skirt, while 11-year-old Charlotte wore a charming polka-dot dress for the Games. The young royal wore her hair loose in soft, natural waves, which fell past her shoulders and appeared longer than ever.

The royals visited on the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games, which had its closing ceremony on Sunday. During one light-hearted moment on the day, Commonwealth Games mascot Finnie also high-fived George, Charlotte and Louis and fist-bumped Kate.

The family were then cheered by the waiting crowds as they made their way to their waiting cars.

The Princess and Duchess are both women who have married into the royal family, with Kate marrying Prince William in 2011, while Sophie tied the knot with Prince Edward in 1999.

Royal insider's view on their friendship from over the years

Ingrid Seward, author of My Mother & I, the Inside Story of the King and Our Late Queen, previously told HELLO!: "They have a sisterly bond and Sophie is like the older sister Kate never had.

"They are both incredibly kind girls and have a caring side to them. They are both protective of their children. Sophie has had a young family, so she knows what it's like trying to protect them while being in the royal world.

"Sophie also has experience of life-threatening illness - she nearly died when her daughter Louise was born. She has been there in the background, as part of a private support network.
