The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are both known for their love of sports, so it came as little surprise to spot them together at the European Athletics Championships.

The championships started earlier in the week in Birmingham, and for the fourth day of the event, Edward and Sophie opted for matching outfits, with the pair both donning a light shade of blue.

Edward wore a blue shirt and beige jacket, while Sophie kept herself cool with a patterned pastel shirt as the pair took their seats.

The duo were spotted at the Championships on a major day for their youngest son, James, Earl of Wessex, who received his A-level results on Thursday. The 18-year-old will be heading to the Royal Agricultural University to study Rural Land & Property Management, Buckingham Palace has now revealed.

The statement read: "Having achieved the grades he needed, The Earl of Wessex will be going to the Royal Agricultural University to study Rural Land & Property Management. He will head straight there without taking a year out."

James is following in the footsteps of his older sister, Lady Louise Windsor, who also went straight to university after receiving her own grades in 2022. Lady Louise, 22, has now chosen to take a gap year after her studies – as was revealed when she graduated from the University of St Andrews in Scotland last month – so James may choose to one day do the same.

Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie's summer of sport

Earlier this week, the Duchess, 61, headed to the artificial slopes in celebration of being named royal patron of the Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team (AFPST). The royal was seen at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead to watch athletes being put through their paces.

Ever one to get involved, Sophie got heavily involved, and she was seen speeding across the artificial snow and attempting target practice with a laser rifle.

The royals were also at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow earlier this month, where they crossed paths with the Prince and Princess of Wales and their two children.

As the family watched the track cycling, Princess Charlotte and Sophie showed off their famously close bond as they greeted each other.

The Duchess, who wasn't joined by her two children, was seen leaning over to hug and kiss the young royal. Although Charlotte returned the hug and was seen smiling, the young royal did appear to be distracted by the sports in front of her, looking down at the track.

Sophie looked absolutely marvellous in a patterned white shirt and denim skirt, while Charlotte wore a polka dot dress for the Games.
