Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie face last-minute plan change during meaningful trip

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh faced a last-minute plan change on Friday due to a sudden cancellation of a royal engagement. 

Prince Edward and Sophie are currently in Edinburgh, Scotland, for a series of events close to their hearts.  

They are attending the Edinburgh International Festival, and were scheduled to attend performances of Come From Away at the Fleming Theatre and Ingoma at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, where Edward is patron, on Friday. 

However, a notice shared on the festival's website has revealed that the performance of Ingoma has been cancelled and will not be shown at this year's events due to "unforeseen circumstances".

It read: "Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the producers of Ingoma! have informed us that this production cannot go ahead this year and as a consequence it will not be performed at the Festival."

Kiki Katese's Ingoma tells the story of a Rwandan women's drumming group who seek to break taboos after a genocide. It features an "electrifying collection of rhythms, songs and dances from both West and East Africa – some traditional, some brand new", according to the website.

Though the performance has been cancelled, the Duke and Duchess will still be busy during their visit up north. 

Elsewhere, Edward is visiting Dance Base to mark their 25th anniversary at Grassmarket in the city.

Edward and Sophie were previously known as the Earl and Countess of Wessex but became Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in 2023. Their visit to the Scottish capital city therefore holds a lot of importance due to their titles. 

Earlier this week, the couple was pictured at the European Athletics Championships on Thursday, while Sophie enjoyed indoor skiing at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead on Monday.

It's also been a big week for the Edinburghs away from the royal calendar, as they're celebrating their son's exam results.

James, Earl of Wessex, collected his A-level grades on Thursday after a nervous few months' wait.

The 18-year-old will be heading to the Royal Agricultural University to study Rural Land & Property Management, Buckingham Palace revealed. 

His older sister, Lady Louise, 22, recently completed her own degree, graduating in English from the University of St Andrews.
