Queen Elizabeth II to Prince Harry: British royal teeth transformations seen in drastic before-and-after pictures

Princess Beatrice has one of the most radiant smiles amongst the royal family, which has prompted discussion that she could not have achieved it without two key treatments. The first is wearing braces to create a straight-toothed look. Speaking to HELLO!, leading dentist Dr Sahil Patel, founder of Marylebone Smile Clinic, revealed why he believes Beatrice had orthodontic work: "Princess Beatrice likely had a form of braces as a teenager, as many people with her facial form have crowding on their front teeth, particularly incisors."

The second factor is that Beatrice's front teeth previously showed signs of discoloration, which Dr Sahil explained was the result of a common condition known as enamel hypocalcification. While it is not clear what causes this, Dr Sahil noted that patients usually visit their dentist to have these spots minimised with regular teeth whitening: "She has likely attempted tooth whitening to help mask the white spots, and this helps by evening out the colour across the teeth, but the white spots usually whiten as well."

Nearly always pictured laughing, Zara Tindall has a dazzling, pearly smile. However, she didn't have perfectly straight teeth as an adult and likely underwent dental treatment to achieve her flawless look.

Looking at her evolving smile, Dr Julia Coelho of The Door W4 spoke to HELLO!, explaining that there are signs she wore braces as a teenager and had composite bonding later on: "Zara has had her lateral incisors restored to improve the shape with either composite bonding or veneers."

Composite bonding is a procedure where a tooth-coloured resin is applied to repair teeth. It is matched to the natural shade of the patient's teeth, and Zara's significantly straighter smile indicates she likely underwent treatment.

Few royal smiles were as iconic or universally recognised as that of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who always lit up a room with her warm presence. She even opened up about having braces when she was younger. In early 2020, she revealed she had braces as a child as she opened the new premises of the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals in London.

Her Majesty said: "I had wires, luckily it was a very long time ago." The Queen then met children receiving treatment, including ten-year-old Ilia Aristovich, who was having braces fitted. The monarch told him: "I think it's worth it, in the end."

When living in Hollywood, having a picture-perfect smile almost comes with the territory. While Prince Harry hasn't always lived in the States, his dental evolution has been notable since the move.

Like his late grandmother and his cousins Eugenie and Beatrice, Harry also had braces when he was younger. 

Before she became a Hollywood actress, Meghan Markle had quite an ordinary smile. In her school pictures, she had a gap between her front teeth that no longer exists.

Speaking to HELLO!, leading dentist Dr Rhonda Eskander explained what work the former Suits actress may have had: "Meghan might have had orthodontic treatment such as braces to close up the gap and widen her smile."

While she likely had braces, it is unlikely she had any composite bonding or veneers, as the shape of her teeth hasn't changed much. It is probable she has had her teeth whitened.

The 22-year-old daughter of Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie has a pearly smile helped by braces, which she was never shy about embracing. Back in 2019, Lady Louise Windsor was spotted at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials at Burghley House proudly showing off her ‘train-track’ braces. Having graduated from the University of St Andrews this year, she now displays her most confident, straight smile yet, proving that orthodontic treatment certainly pays off.
