King Charles acceded to the throne four years ago when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II passed away on 8 September 2022. May the following year was when his official coronation took place, and in a reflective post, the Royal Collection Trust shared an image of a portrait, which was commissioned to commemorate the occasion.
When the post first went up it mistakenly read: "On this day in 2023, King Charles III acceded to the throne," and the incorrect date was swiftly amended to 2022, however, not before eagle-eyed fans noticed. "2022" one fan simply corrected and another added: "You'd think they'd know!" A third wrote: "On this day, 2022!"
The rest of the caption read: "Painted to mark the Coronation of King Charles III on 6 May 2023, this portrait continues a long tradition of Coronation state portraits that spans centuries. It was commissioned by The King and painted by Peter Kuhfeld over the course of a year.
"The portrait now hangs in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace. The Palace is open for self-guided tours until 27 September 2026."
Other comments focused on the incredible portrait, which showed King Charles in his Coronation robe alongside his crown positioned on a cushion. "Love the King and Queen’s coronation state portraits" wrote one follower and: "I love this portrait!" added another.
Charles' coronation anxiety
Becoming King was a day Charles had waited for his whole life, but it turns out the monarch is just like the rest of us, even suffering from nerves.
© GettyIn a documentary called Coronation Girls, the monarch admitted that he felt "slightly anxious" about wearing his crown on 6 May 2023 because of its incredible weight.
"The big one that you're crowned with, the St Edward’s Crown, weighs five pounds.
"It is much heavier and taller, so there's always that feeling of feeling slightly anxious, in case it wobbles," he said.
© GettyPrince WIlliam played an important role on the day too, as he pledged his allegiance to his father, the new King. During the ceremony, he recited: "I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb. So help me God." Charles appeared to get emotional during the touching moment that he shared with his son.
Prince Harry even flew in from the US for the occasion, but swiftly departed after the ceremony to catch a flight back home. At the time, HELLO! consulted a lipreader who confirmed he said: "I will be straight to the airport," while chatting with Princess Eugenie's husband Jack Brooksbank.
