Queen Margrethe has returned to public outings one month after being taken to hospital.

The former Danish monarch, 86, joined her son King Frederik and his wife Queen Mary for a concert at Fredensborg Church on Wednesday evening, alongside her sister, Princess Benedikte.

Queen Mary wore a gold midi skirt and a long-sleeved black V-neck blouse, while Margrethe wore an electric blue ensemble and looked radiant. She also appeared to have a plaster across her nose.

She has a personal connection to the church, which is celebrating its 300th anniversary, and was actively involved in its restoration in the 1970s.

Queen Margrethe designed three liturgical vestments, which her mother, Queen Ingrid, and sister Benedikte embroidered.

Fredensborg Church was built between 1724 and 1726 by the architect JC Krieger, who was also responsible for the palace and its baroque gardens, and was inaugurated on 11 October 1726.

Queen Margrethe's latest hospital stay

On 6 September, the Danish royal palace announced that Queen Margrethe had been and would remain under observation for several days.

A statement from the Danish Royal Household read at the time: "Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet on Sunday after feeling unwell.

"A new blood clot was detected in her hip area, as well as mild dehydration."

Four days later, on 10 September, she returned home to the Palace, although doctors recommended rest to reduce her activity for the following weeks.

It meant Margrethe was forced to skip the funeral of King Harald V of Norway, her close friend, and has spent the past month recovering.

The former ruler, who abdicated in 2024 in favour of her son, also did not attend the opening of the Danish Parliament earlier this week, contrary to tradition.
