Queen Mary is renowned for being a champion of sustainable style, and once again proved her fashion credentials at one of her latest outings. The Danish queen, 54, blended contemporary and heirloom jewels as she and her husband, King Frederik, 58, celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Carlsberg Foundation at Frederiksborg Castle on Friday.
Mary glittered in a cream and metallic ruffled dress by Australia designer, Toni Maticevski, paired with gold pumps and a snakeskin clutch bag. But it was her jewels that caught everybody’s attention.
The Hobart-born royal sported a striking pair of leaf-shaped gold and diamond earrings by Ole Lynggaard along with a 158-year-old bracelet from the Danish Royal Property Trust’s collection.
The heirloom piece, which features eight square sections, each with a large pearl surrounded by 16 diamonds, was an engagement gift from Frederik VIII to his future wife, Queen Lovisa. The bracelet dates back to 1868 and Queen Mary has previously worn the jewels for one of the New Year levees in Copenhagen earlier this year.

She founded the Danish Royal Property Trust in 1910, leaving her extensive jewellery collection to the disposal of the sitting queen of Denmark, many of which have been worn by Queen Mary and King Frederik’s mother, Queen Margrethe, who abdicated in 2024.
Private holiday
Friday’s lavish event saw the unveiling of the first official portrait painting of King Frederik after his accession to the throne. The painting, created by artist Cathrine Raben Davidsen, is on display in the Great Hall at Frederiksborg Castle alongside portraits of the other Danish monarchs, from Christian IX to the present day.
Just days after King Frederik and Queen Mary’s outing, the Danish royal palace confirmed that the couple are on a private holiday abroad with their eldest son, Crown Prince Christian, 20, acting as regent in his father’s absence from Sunday to Thursday.
The royal household has not confirmed where the king and queen are on vacation, however, Danish publication, BILLED-BLADET, notes that Frederik has previously participated in the French sailing competition Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, which takes place from 26 September to 4 October.
