Royal news RECAP: Princess Kate and Prince William return to official duties after Prince Harry's UK move

It's been a busy week for the royals with Prince George starting Eton College and the royals of the world journeying to Oslo yesterday for King Harald of Norway's state funeral. 

After joining the royal funeral procession alongside Princess Anne and a plethora of European royals, Prince William is set to return to the UK today for a poignant engagement. The royal will head to Liverpool to urge the sports sector to act on suicide prevention. 

Meanwhile, Princess Anne is scheduled to be back in London where she will open Mablethorpe Station in Lincs.

Prince William has launched a poignant initiative on World Suicide Prevention Day today. 

William's new campaign, On Your Side, aims to raise awareness and help sport organisations with the approaches needed for suicide prevention. The toolkit has been developed by The Royal Foundation in partnership with the British Standards Institution and Chasing the Stigma.

The royal released a video for the new campaign featuring England football captain Harry Kane and Formula One driver George Russell, who have been enlisted to speak on the issue. 

"Through my work on mental health, I have met people whose lives have been changed forever by suicide. But I have also met people whose lives have been saved because someone stepped in to help. Each of their experiences has had a profound impact on me," William has written in a foreword to the document. 

"In moments of need, the right support can make all the difference. We all have the power to help, and that’s why suicide prevention must be an important part of everyday sporting life." He adds: "I hope that On Your Side encourages everyone in sport, in every discipline and at every level, to make suicide prevention part of your game plan."

Princess Diana's 'revenge' dress from the "worst night of her life" is returning to the spotlight. 

The famous little black dress from 1994 will be displayed in London next month before going to auction later in the year. The archival dress will go under the hammer in an auction hosted by Sotheby’s in New York in December, where it is expected to be sold for up to £220,000. 

"Princess Diana was walking into the worst night of her life and you would never know it to look at her," the consignor, who bought Diana's dress during its original sale in 1997 said. 

"It went from a cocktail dress to a statement in the time it took to photograph her. Thirty years on, you can say the words anywhere in the world and everyone knows exactly which dress you mean."

Diana wore the iconic dress three decades ago at a Vanity Fair fundraising dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Royal fans will be able to view the dress when it embarks on a global exhibition tour, making its way to London at Sotheby’s auction house from 18 to 24 September.

Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands joined her parents, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, and royals from across Europe for King Harald's state funeral in Oslo on 9 September. 

The 22-year-old royal arrived for the sombre occasion wearing a £785 midi dress by one of the Princess of Wales' favourite designers, London-based label Roland Mouret, as identified by Royal Fashion Police on Instagram. 

Amalia complemented her formal attire on Wednesday with several items borrowed from her mother's wardrobe – including a pair of Gianvito Rossi heels Queen Máxima has worn on numerous occasions since 2021.

The Princess reportedly finished off her look with two more of Queen Máxima's accessories: the Carlend Copenhagen 'Aicha' clutch and a veiled hat by Philip Treacy.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have returned to official duties after Prince Harry's return to the UK last month. 

Princess Kate joined her husband on Thursday at Hill Dickinson stadium to show her support for Prince William's poignant new initiative on World Suicide Prevention Day. 

Kate and William stepped out for the engagement in Liverpool, a day after William attended King Harald's funeral in Oslo. The Princess of Wales looked lovely in a blue suit jacket and matching trousers with her hair out in a cascade of curls. 

Mental health awareness has been an issue close to the Prince and Princess of Wales' hearts for years, with The Royal Foundation launching the Heads Together campaign in 2016 with the aim to end the stigma surrounding mental health. 

It's been a big week for the Waleses who saw their first born son, Prince George, off to boarding school for his first day at Eton College on Tuesday.  

The Princess of Wales looked stylish as ever in Liverpool on Thursday as she supported her husband for the poignant outing. 

Kate looked lovely in a teal suit from Edeline Lee, which she previously wore in Italy. 

The 'Cornflower Blue' two-piece was made up of high-waisted, flared trousers and a slim-cut jacket with ruching at the back forming a flattering, waist-cinching peplum silhouette. 

She paired her look with pointed-toe heels and the Laura Lombardi 'Portrait' necklace she wore for Prince George's first day at Eton College. Her hair was swept to the side and styled in her usual effortless waves.

It's been an incredibly busy week for Prince William who saw his son, Prince George, off to Eton College on Tuesday and then flew to Oslo for King Harald's state funeral on Wednesday. 

The royal returned to the UK for his outing in Liverpool to promote suicide prevention, where his wife made a surprise appearance to show her support. 

William was set to make a solo appearance at Everton Football Club on Thursday for the poignant launch. However, Kate unexpectedly joined her husband, marking the first joint royal outing for the couple since the Sussexes return to the UK last month.

Denmark's Queen Margrethe sadly had to miss her close friend, King Harald's funeral after the 86-year-old was rushed to hospital. At the time, the Danish Palace said that the former monarch would remain under observation for several days.

She has now been discharged from hospital, with a release from the Palace saying: "Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was discharged from Rigshospitalet this morning and is now back at Fredensborg Palace. Queen Margrethe is well and will take it easy in the coming time."

The royal was hospitalised back in May after suffering from angina, and returned to Rigshospitalet a week later. Angina causes pain, pressure, and tightness in the chest when the heart muscle does not receive enough blood and oxygen.

In September 2024, Margrethe was hospitalised after suffering a fall at Fredensborg Palace. The accident resulted in a cervical spine injury and a fracture in her left hand. 

She had already undergone complex back surgery in 2023 and abdicated in her traditional New Year's Eve address after 52 years on the throne, citing her advanced age and failing health.

As she made her return to work, joining her husband as he launched a suicide prevention guidance, the Princess of Wales wore a very special pair of earrings. The royal wore a pair of earrings from jewellery label Issy Star which had been given to her by grieving mother Sarah Renton when she visited Maidenhead Rugby Club in June 2023; they had been created in memory of Sarah's daughter Issy Phipps after she took her own life that year aged 17.

Speaking to HELLO!, Issy's cousin, Sophie McGown, said: "I was flying down from Scotland to London for Issy's Walk on what would've been her 21st birthday this Saturday, and Issy's mum was coming to collect me from the airport.

"I'd just stepped off the plane and was sitting on the bus when my Instagram suddenly started going mad. People were tagging me and saying, 'Oh my God, I think she's wearing Issy’s earrings.' I just sat there crying.

"All I could think was that Princess Catherine had woken up that morning and thought of Issy. Her heart is just so big - she did this for everyone who has lost someone to suicide and for anyone who may be struggling with their mental health. It was completely overwhelming, phenomenal and incredibly special."

Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra joined Norway's royal family on 9 September to bid a final farewell to her grandfather, King Harald.

For the sombre occasion, the royal, who is heir to the Norwegian throne, dressed in a formal coat and ballet flats over black opaque tights. She had her hair swept up elegantly ini a bun and wore a netted mourning veil. 

For a final meaningful touch, Ingrid Alexandra wore a diamond, ruby and pearl Pendant that was a Christening gift from her grandmother, Queen Sonja, as reported by Royal Fashion Blog on Instagram

Prince Harry has been back in the UK for only a matter of months, but the Duke of Sussex is already an eying a return to the United States. Harry has been confirmed as a guest at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2026 Annual Meeting, which will be held in New York City later this month.

It has not yet been confirmed whether Harry will be making an in-person appearance, or virtually appearing from his new home with Meghan Markle and their two children.

Harry will join a star-studded guest list, which includes  Jeremy Allaire, Ajay Banga, Jarbas Barbosa, Philippe Duneton, Prince Harry, Reid Hoffman, Greg Jackson, Michele Jawando, Juvencio Maeztu, Bill Nye, Aaron Parnas, Carmen Rojas, John-Arne Røttingen, Barham Salih, Chrissy Teigen and Muhammad Yunus.

It's been a year since Prince Williams launched Homewards, a program working towards ending and preventing homelessness by identifying and supporting those most at risk, and it's Prince William's understanding of trauma that is helping to drive his fight to end homelessness, according to an advocate of his ambitious Homewards programme.

Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, who experienced rough sleeping as a teenager, said of the heir to the throne: "He understands trauma. He can see echoes of it in himself I think, from that experience of trauma and how it affects you and how it affects the way you see things."

The Prince was just 15 when his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, was tragically killed in a car crash. In recent years he has also spoken about the traumatic incidents he witnessed as a pilot working for East Anglian Air Ambulance.
