She may be the Queen Consort but Camilla is just like us mere mortals when it comes to her home comforts, according to her son.

In a new interview, Tom Parker Bowles, 51, shares that his mother, 79, is a "big walker," makes "amazing scrambled eggs" and read to him and his sister, Laura Lopes, "every night" when they were children.

The food writer and critic spoke to Scottish regional newspaper, The Press & Journal, about his catch-ups with Queen Camilla at Balmoral after appearing at the Braemar Literary Festival.

"We're big walkers… and it's just so different from London, obviously," he said.

While the father-of-two hasn't cooked for his royal relatives, he shared Camilla's down-to-earth go-to breakfast staples.

"She loves toast, actually, and she makes amazing scrambled eggs," he said.

Tom, who is Camilla's son from her previous marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles, is the author of nine cookery books and has even revealed his mother's delicious roast chicken recipe.

"People forget that before she was, you know, this royal figure, we grew up in the country in Wiltshire. My dad was in the army and was away a lot. So she cooked for us kids. She was a really good cook – a traditional British cook," he told the newspaper.

"Animated" reader

Camilla, who founded The Queen's Reading Room during the COVID-19 pandemic, is passionate about the benefits of reading and literacy.

Her Majesty has passed down her love of books to her children and grandchildren, with Tom revealing:  "She was quite animated. And she did read to us every night. And I think it's fair to say she would have tried to do all the voices, but that's maybe not her thing."

The Queen has previously shared that her husband, King Charles, is "brilliant" at mimicking the Harry Potter characters' voices when reading to her five grandchildren.

"The King used to do it with Harry Potter with my children, and my nephew and nieces. He would sit with them, reading, and he really is a good actor," Tom confirmed.
