Zara Tindall has revealed that her father could be "quite critical" and "tough" towards his children growing up.
Princess Anne and her ex-husband, Captain Mark Phillips, raised their two children, Zara and Peter Phillips, on the Gatcombe Estate in Gloucestershire before their 1992 divorce.
Speaking to hosts Pippa Funnel and Tristan Phipps on the Talk Horse podcast in an episode broadcast on Thursday, equestrian Zara confessed that Anne and Mark had rather different approaches to parenting.
She described how her parents wanted her to succeed with her horse riding, explaining: "Mum's [Princess Anne] very relaxed. She's like, 'Just, you know, just do what you do,' whereas my father's [Mark Phillips] like, 'More of this, more of that.'"
She added: "My father was quite critical... Very rarely you would get a, 'Yeah, that was good', out of him. So it was always striving to try and get that comment. He was a tough coach.
"My dad and my mum were like, 'But you have to do it properly. And this is how it's going to work. And you're not getting any help, and you need to produce results'."
Their approach clearly worked, as Zara won the British Open – her first major competition in nearly 20 years – earlier this year.
She previously won silver at the London Olympics in 2012, and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2006.
Zara recalls moment daughter Mia 'rolled her eyes' at her
Zara and her husband Mike Tindall seem to be taking a slightly softer approach to parenting their three children, Mia, 12, Lena, eight, and four-year-old Lucas.
Earlier this week, Mike shared how they are all taking after their mother by being "competitive", especially when it comes to racing up the stairs for bed.
Zara also revealed that Mia and Lena have been jumping with their cousins, Savannah and Isla Phillips, who are the daughters of Peter Phillips and his ex-wife Autumn Kelly.
She said on the podcast: "I took Mia for a jump the other day. Mia and her two cousins. And then I said, 'To me' or something, she just rolled her eyes and went 'Urgh', I was like, 'I literally said the same thing to the other guys. They didn't roll their eyes at me'."
"I think I was probably like that with my mother and father too; I'm sure they'll tell you that," the mother-of-three added.
Mark Phillips's most recent public appearance
In June, Captain Mark made a rare appearance in public to attend his son Peter's second wedding to Harriet Sperling in the Cotswolds.
He was seen outside All Saints' Church in Cirencester, joined by his rumoured girlfriend, Florence Standaert.
Captain Mark was married to Princess Anne from 1973 to 1992, and the former couple remains on good terms, often crossing paths at horsing events.
Outside of his marriage to Princess Anne, Captain Mark shares Felicity Tonkin, born in August 1985, with New Zealand art teacher Heather Tonkin. He also has a daughter from his second marriage to Sandy Pflueger, called Stephanie Phillips.
Mark and Anne separated in 1989 after reported affairs on both sides, divorcing in 1992.
Princess Anne went on to marry her current husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.
