Balmoral Castle is considered one of the British royal family's favourite holiday destinations, with King Charles continuing his late mother Queen Elizabeth's tradition of spending the summers in Scotland.
During the break, Elizabeth often invited her family to join her at the 53,000-acre estate, which housed the main Scottish Baronial fortress, seven-bedroom Craigowan Lodge, King Charles' private residence Birkhall, and Prince William's three-bedroom Tam-na-Ghar.
Like many royal homes, Balmoral offered amenities on Her Late Majesty's doorstep, including a Post Office, meaning they never had to travel far or risk being spotted by royal fans when posting letters to pen pals or hand-picking snacks.
Eugenie and Beatrice's happy family holiday
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were among those spotted using the Post Office back in May 1997, exiting the doors with bags full of tasty treats.
Dressed in Barbie pink shorts and trainers, Eugenie led the way with her brunette bob bouncing in her excitement to rush down the steps, while her elder sister Beatrice followed in pastel pink dungarees for their low-key family outing.
They were accompanied by their mother, Sarah Ferguson, who, despite separating from the Queen's son Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in 1992, continued to maintain an amicable co-parenting relationship.
At the time, their trip made headlines as a divorced royal ex-spouse holidaying on a royal estate was unprecedented. Despite rumours that they had rekindled their romance, the former couple went on to describe themselves as the "happiest divorced couple".
Breakdown of Andrew and Sarah's post-divorce relationship
They remained close and even lived together at Royal Lodge until February 2026, when they were evicted amid Andrew's ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
He moved to King Charles' Sandringham estate, while Sarah seemed to travel to a luxury Swiss clinic before reportedly returning to the UK, where she is now "unwelcome" at the home of her ex-husband.
Sarah has now moved back to a rented house in the Home Counties, where she has been visited by her two daughters, according to royal commentator Phil Dampier.
"Friends tell me they have both been to see her at her new house in the past couple of weeks. I don't think they want to be seen with her in public at the moment, and she probably realises it's not a good idea either, but behind the scenes they are talking and trying to be supportive," he exclusively told HELLO!.
