Hugh Grant was no doubt looking forward to some fine Italian cuisine when he jetted into San Remo for its annual music festival. But there was a distinctly English flavour to his appearance on a local talk show: his hosts took it upon themselves to prepare lashings of tea and scones.
The British actor was guest of honour on a TV special to celebrate the country's biggest musical event. And he seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself as presenter Paolo Bonolis and his glamorous co-host Federica Felini joined him for a bit of traditional English fare.
San Remo is famous for more than concerts and the occasional A-list visitor. Located on the Riviera de Ponente west of Genoa, it has long been a favourite with well-to-do Italians who travel from all around the country to enjoy its unusually balmy winter temperatures.
The famous San Remo casino also makes it a mecca for those in search of a little glamour. Indeed, the town's reputation for glitz goes back a long way: the composer Tchaikovsky and Russian empress Maria Alexandranova are among the historical figures who once savoured its unique charms.
Locals seemed intent on making just as big an impression on their latest VIP guest.
Given that his fellow Londoner David Beckham plays for Real Madrid, one might expect Hugh to be a fan of Spanish football, but Paolo and Federica did their best to win him over by presenting him with an Inter Milan jersey.
