2025 marked the year that the naked dress reigned supreme. Standout moments included Margot Robbie's jeweled custom Armani Privé look, Dakota Johnson and Demi Moore’s lace creations by Gucci, and Lily Allen’s striking Coleen Allen 'revenge dress'. However, this year, the sartorial set is taking a more whimsical, Sixties-inspired turn to the trend with the rise of negligee dressing.
Sabrina Carpenter graced the Dior Cruise Show in a daring sheer number reminiscent of ethereal glamour. Styled by Jared Ellner, the singer wore a butter-yellow look from the French maison's RE27 collection. The garment, which featured a sleeveless design and high neckline, was adorned with vertical pleats crafted from whisper-thin fabric for a see-through effect. Beneath the dress, she wore an exposed white lace bra and matching pants.
The voluminous skirt was embellished with oversized, 3D floral appliqués in hues of cream and yellow while the silhouette was enhanced by a tiered and pleated effect for an ombre finish at the hem.
Sabrina accessorized with a matching large handbag and a pair of open-toe yellow heels. Her luscious blonde locks were styled into soft waves, with a white bow pinned at the back.
The romantic look is part of the larger underwear-as-outerwear trend that continues to blur the line between lingerie and evening wear. During Miu Miu’s autumn/winter 2025 runway, bras were layered beneath ribbed knits or seen peeking out from under ruffled silk dresses. Simone Rocha styled fuzzy fur bras with leather jackets and billowing skirts, while Sarah Burton at Givenchy layered delicate bras beneath sheer mesh dresses.
Slip dresses were spotlighted during the spring/summer 2024 shows, with the likes of Coperni, Gucci and Versace all embracing iterations of the whimsical négligée. With delicate mesh, sumptuous silk, intricate lace, and flirtatious hems, the look is defined by classic evening wear with a daring twist.
Leading the wave of whimsical tulle and soft cotton is Chemena Kamali’s Chloé, which embraces flowing bohemian-inspired silhouettes.
Dior Cruise
Jonathan Anderson debuted his 2027 Dior Cruise Show on May 13 at the David Geffen Galleries in Hollywood. For the Cruise collection, Jonathan Anderson took inspiration from the worlds of cinema, California’s scenic landscapes, and vintage car culture.
The show opened with drop-hem dresses crafted from sheer fabrics, before shifting focus to relaxed tailoring, raw hems, gathered textures, and oversized silhouettes. The front row featured the likes of Jisoo, Miley Cyrus and Anya Taylor-Joy.
