It truly is a perfect day indeed!
On Saturday, June 20, the stars of the iconic 2001 comedy Legally Blonde reunited in New York City to not only celebrate the film's coming 25th anniversary, but also "Elle World," a celebration of the upcoming prequel series Elle.
Several of the original film's stars joined Lexi Minetree, who plays Elle Woods in the Prime Video prequel series, which premieres on July 1, 2026.
Reese Witherspoon led the pack, dressed appropriately in a pink Prada dress, plus Selma Blair, Jennifer Coolidge, Matthew Davis, Ali Larter and Victor Garber, as well as the musicians behind two of the highlights from Legally Blonde's soundtrack.
The first, Vanessa Carlton, whose hit "A Thousand Miles" is used as an interlude, plus pop singer and actress Hoku, who sang "Perfect Day," which opens the original film as Elle gets ready for her (final) date with her boyfriend Warner.
Fans online, in particular, were thrilled to see Hoku, now 45, make an appearance at the event and even perform her signature hit, with videos of Reese happily singing along as well.
The pop star wore a colorful mini dress, inspired by her Hawaiian heritage, paired with pink platform pumps, and a flower in her hair. And fans were immediately enthralled by her appearance.
"PERFECT LOOOOK," one gushed on her Instagram page, with another saying: "So much yessss," and a third also adding: "You look amazing, love this look for you!" One also wrote: "You haven't changed!" while another added: "You look exactly the same."
Born Hoku Christian Ho in 1981, Hoku has entertainment in her blood, as the daughter of fellow musician Don Ho, who is best known for his 1966 hit "Tiny Bubbles." She performed and co-wrote with her father as a child, with his fame eventually helping her break through as well.
In 2000, at the age of 19, she released her debut single "Another Dumb Blonde," which was featured on the soundtrack for Snow Day. The song (and its music video in particular) proved to be a breakout hit, becoming her first (and to date only) top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It preceded her debut self-titled album, which charted at 151 on the Billboard 200.
However, after the release of "Perfect Day," Hoku felt her pop persona clashed with her Christian upbringing, and decided to leave her record label. She returned with an EP in 2008 before leaving the industry for over a decade.
In 2018, Hoku officially returned to music with her EP Called by Name, her first collection of music inspired by her faith, and has since released two more singles to support it (her last original release came in 2020).
Now a mom-of-three living in California, Hoku still considers "Perfect Day" to be her signature hit, despite "Another Dumb Blonde's" chart success. "No one really knew that Legally Blonde was going to be what it was," she told Billboard of the song and film's enduring legacy.
"Literally, [my label heads] were like, 'This movie's not going to become anything.' And then the next thing you know, it's this iconic movie. And my song opens it! Sitting in the premiere and hearing my song open the movie, and everyone's cheering — it felt like, 'I've really arrived now, folks.'"
