Adam Sandler may have been one of the biggest surprises at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding, but his starring role in the ceremony was far from random.
The beloved actor and comedian officiated the couple's wedding at New York City's Madison Square Garden on Friday, leading the pair through their vows before they were officially declared husband and wife in front of family and close friends.
While many fans were caught off guard by the choice, Adam has spent years building genuine friendships with both Taylor and Travis.
Travis called working with Adam 'a dream come true'
Adam and Travis first became close while filming Happy Gilmore 2, in which the Kansas City Chiefs star made a cameo appearance.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show earlier this year, Travis couldn't hide his excitement about working with one of his comedy heroes.
"Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain," he said.
He added: "He's every bit as cool off the screen as he is on the screen, and that was a dream come true."
The admiration is clearly mutual. Ahead of the film's release, Adam described Travis as "such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell."
"He's like the guys I grew up with," the actor told Entertainment Tonight. "When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school."
He also praised the NFL star as "a great actor, a great human" and "a stud."
Taylor has become part of the Sandler family
Adam's friendship with Taylor stretches back even further. The comedian has often spoken about how kind the singer has been to his family, particularly his daughters, Sadie and Sunny, who have met the global superstar several times over the years.
"Taylor is incredible," Adam said.
"Taylor is so damn nice to my family and has always been. My kids have met Taylor a bunch of times over the years, and she's ridiculously nice to them and warm."
The families were photographed sharing a sweet moment together at the Los Angeles premiere of Taylor's Eras Tour concert film in 2023.
Despite knowing her personally, Adam has admitted he still gets starstruck.
Appearing on Conan O'Brien's podcast in 2024, he confessed: "I can get a little jumpy around Taylor... just because I don't want to blow it for my kids."
Reflecting on her extraordinary success, he added: "People talk about The Beatles of it all and her. I mean, so many smash hits. There's not a word my kids don't know."
Family remained at the heart of the ceremony
Adam wasn't the only loved one given a starring role during Friday's ceremony.
Taylor broke with wedding tradition by asking her younger brother, Austin Swift, to serve as her "Man of Honor", while Travis's older brother, Jason Kelce, stood beside him as best man.
The deeply personal touches reflected the couple's close relationships with family and friends throughout the celebration.
After Taylor and Travis were officially pronounced husband and wife, Madison Square Garden joined the celebrations in spectacular fashion.
The arena's giant exterior screens lit up with glowing pink "JUST T MARRIED!" signs, while the venue shared a photo on social media alongside the caption: "It's a love story," a fitting tribute to Taylor's beloved 2008 hit Love Story.
For a couple whose romance has captivated millions around the world, having one of Hollywood's most beloved stars lead them into married life felt like the perfect ending to their fairytale ceremony.
