Kristin Cavallari just revealed a controversial parenting move. The 39-year-old reality TV star opened up about the boundaries she has with her three children.
On Tuesday, July 7, the Uncommon James founder chatted with Emma Grede on the Aspire podcast about one of her most beloved parenting rules. Kristin makes her kids, Camden Jack, 13, Jaxon, 12, and Saylor, 10, work for what they want.
"My kids don't just get whatever they want," she told Emma. "And if they want something, they have to work for it. So a good example is last summer, both of my boys created their own little businesses. So one of my boys was washing people's windows. And the other one was washing people's garbage cans. Because if they want something, they got to go work for it. And they got to make it happen."
Kristin continued, explaining how conscious she is about ensuring her kids understand that her money, and their dad Jay Cutler's money, is not their money.
"Something as small as they fly coach, I'm flying first class. That was important to me when they became old enough that they could," she added. "It's not [difficult to do] when they're older. I'm like, 'Bye guys, have fun back there.'"
While the Laguna Beach star didn't use this parenting tool when her kids were younger, now that they are tweens, she believes they'll be "fine" alone in coach.
"It's good for them," Kristin continued. "And I think it's the little things like that as a parent that make, ultimately, I think, a big difference in the long run."
Kristin's life as a single mom
Kristin married the Chicago Bears quarterback in 2013. After Jay, 43, retired from the NFL, the family moved to Nashville. But, after nine years of marriage, Kristin and Jay divorced, leaving Kristin to parent on her own.
She works hard to balance her business and motherhood, but it can be difficult.
"I think there are so many ways to come into being a business woman and a mother and there is no one size fits all," the cookbook author and podcaster shared with Emma. "What works for me is very different from what will work for you."
After splitting with Jay in 2022, Kristin went on to date the much younger social media star, Mark Estes. The 26-year-old and the mom-of-three dated for seven months before she broke up with him.
"[My sons] told me recently that like a year ago or something when I was dating that younger guy, that their friends said they saw he and I played a drinking game or something on the podcast, and they saw some of the sexual stuff that we were talking about," Kristin opened up about on her podcast, Let's Be Honest, in January 2026.
She added that their conversation "made [her] be like, 'Whoa, I need to watch what I'm saying."
