Teen Wolf actor Dylan Sprayberry shocked fans when he debuted a whole new look on social media, and declared that he had joined the highly controversial Church of Scientology after getting sober. The 28-year-old, who portrayed Liam Dunbar for three seasons of the hit CW show, took to Instagram to share a message with his fans while dressed in a beige button-up shirt and olive green tie.
His brunette locks were cropped short, and he looked unrecognizable from his Teen Wolf character as he spoke on his religious journey. "I am a Scientologist. I've been a Scientologist for three years now. It's been an epic experience for me. It's been so fantastic," he said in the video.
"I was a chronic drug user for about 10 years. Around 23 is when I first got sober. About two years in, I was trying to handle that anxiety and that depression with these drugs. Now that I'm sober, I could tell that it's still there. It's just suppressed. That was tough, but I had to confront it."
Dylan continued that he met "some amazing Scientologists" who helped him start a "purification rundown" that allowed him to detox his body.
"The purification rundown is what it sounds like. It's basically a detox program that gets drugs and toxins out of your body for good. I did that, and it was awesome. It was so much fun, because I'm a very active person, so doing the detox program with the running and the sauna sweat felt so good," he explained.
Dylan went on to share that he read Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's book The Way to Happiness, which completely changed his mindset.
"I had a huge realization, which sounds so silly to say now, but it's that happiness is not something that I have to get, it's something that I create within myself," he said. "Even though that's so simple, it was a big slap on the head to me. I was like, 'Oh wow, I've been creating my state of being all this time.'"
"The whole reason I was depressed and anxious and all that stuff was because I was not being that person who creates happiness for myself," the actor added. "I was creating depression and anxiety by my behavior, my actions, my point of view on the world. So when I read that book, it really helped open my eyes to the power of that."
Dylan concluded by explaining that actions like "telling the truth", "taking care of [his] body", and "not judging other people's religions" had allowed him to create happiness from within. The Man of Steel star received mixed responses to his declaration in the comment section, with many fans pointing out the cult-like actions of Scientology and the reports of human rights abuses and financial exploitation within the religion.
"The harm and pain caused by that place are not worth any good you feel you're finding," wrote one fan, while another added: "This is disappointing," and a third said: "This is so sad…praying for your freedom."
Other fans congratulated Dylan on his sobriety journey and shared their support. "I'm so happy you're doing so well and found happiness and something that works for you," one declared, while another chimed in: "This is amazing, love that you're sharing your story and doing so well." Dylan reprised his role in 2023's Teen Wolf: The Movie, before pivoting to an indie music career. He is expecting his first child with his wife, Pruette Karl.
